Newcomer / Intro Is Eagle Any Good For Combat ?

The reason I ask is I thought I would try my FreEagle and add a couple of multi-cannons to go with the loaned Pulse Laser. I supercruised to a local star and was Interdicted, as soon as I came out my shields went down practically straight away and there was chunks being taken out of my hull. I tried Boosting away as quickly as possible but by this time my Eagle was too badly damaged.

Is the Eagle only good for selling and making 40000 credits ?

The Eagle is great but the stock reactor makes it tricky.

When outfitting, make sure your "deployed" power draw (top line on the bottom right panel) is below the reactor capacity. You can upgrade the reactor, and even a relatively cheap upgrade will give you enough capacity to power three weapons. You can also juggle with power priority (right cockpit panel) to make sure the shields stay powered when weapons are deployed.

I personally prefer the sidewinder to start with. I think the Eagle needs a bit of upgrading to get it any good but you could more easily spend the money upgrading the sidewinder.

IMO I agree with Fost. The trick lies in the upgrades. You definately need a class A power distributor and a better FSD creating a snoball effect on other stuff you need.

Yesterday I took out a NPC Python with the eagle. Don't know if thats any good, but it felt good ;)

I kitted mine with rating C or below and it's a fine ship. Overall cost should be well below 100k credits too. You just need to look around because in C rating you'll have a bit of choice between the numeric classes where some options give a weight reduction at close to no functional gain. I went for those that didn't (significantly) change weight. Once you have a better reactor and power distributor, things start to look seriously awesome.

haha I got bit by this after hafing upgraded weapons. In next battle situation power failed when I deployed them. I had to frantically shut down cargo scoop and other inessentials while being shot at to power up again. I got away by the skin of my teeth.

It's more nimble than the starting Sidewinder, and has 1 or 2 more hardpoints to stick some guns on :)

What you could do (the shields are indeed weaker), is perhaps strip out the cargo hatch and add an extra shield module?

It's nice having a couple of storage bays for scooping any random cargo you find, but....

Only flew mine last night. I'm looking for a more exploration-suited ship at the moment though

Some say it is a paper ship. Indeed it is fragile. But besides that it is a good fighting ship capable of taking all smaller targets (up to an Asp imo). I have got Type 6 for trading, cobra for exploration and eagle for the dogfights. Once you become familiar with the combat mechanics you will like the ship for its speed and maneuverability (I do). However it is much easier to fight with a cobra or an asp...

For "serious" exploration I'd look at an Adder (which is basically the love child of an Eagle and a Hauler), everything below that tends to come with too little tanks and a few hardpoints short of a camper.

Just look at upgrading the shields a bit, but even the stock shields get way better with an improved power distributor. In terms of weapons, I put the two loaned pulse lasers on the bottom and a gimbaled multicannon on top (lasers on trigger 1, cannon on trigger 2) which gives you a tight direct fire pattern to take out shields and added flexibility in tight dogfights. With a bit of practice, that's good against "expert" AI Vipers.

The Eagle is excellent for combat as it is so nimble but it is pretty much made of paper. That said it is agile enough that, if skilled enough, you can literally stick yourself to the enemies tail and never get shot in 1v1. In a conflict zone it is less useful because other enemies can tag you.

I used the eagle for a day or two and put about 100k worth of upgrades into it, lots of fun was had interdicting wanted npcs for their bounties, i've now upgraded to a viper which is just awesome for what im doing.

dunno if someone has already said it but your shields will take more hits if you put more power into them, when you know your gunna take hits dump all your power into the shields till you get behind them again, not that i know much atm new to this myself.

Not to high jack the thread or anything but how much creds does it cost to outfit a decent Eagle? I have 200 creds and not sure if I want to upgrade it or focus on buying a viper/something better for combat. I have a hauler atm.

As I said above, I paid a bit under 100,000 credits to get a pretty decent setup, but that included upgrades to pretty much every component. You need a better power distributor (around 18,000, without it the boost and shields take forever to recharge, and weapons cooldown and reload are also a big issue) and can already do a bit of hunting. After that, a better generator and a third gun should set you back another ~25-30,000.

The eagle is a fighter role ship. Repairs, modules and fuel are cheap. Pimp it to grade A and you have a good ship for bounty hunting even viper and cobras.

As others have said it's a great little figher, but not in it's default config. Don't even try using it in it's stock loadout. I've spent a good couple of hundred thousand on mine (at a guess) and it's a pretty nifty little ship for taking on ships of a similar size, sidewinders, haulers, even cobras and vipers (though be careful taking those on).

First things first dump the cargo rack, it's useless. After that I started by upgrading the power plant, then added new weapons currently multi cannons and a burst laser (which I may upgrade to gimbled so it can fire with the multis), next up should be the power distributor so you can up your recharge rates (get the best you can afford) then just fiddle to your hearts content. I've upgraded the shields and armour to military grade composites which give you a few more seconds under fire.

All told it's a good little ship, just be careful not to take too much fire.
