You probably should have used the search, it would have been quicker.

But in answer to your question.

No, not diectly.

You cannot play with your friend on pc whilst playing xbox.

But, if you both have a pc, then you both can get it off the epic store for free.

Limited crossplay. CMDRs on different platforms can't directly interact. All assets and the BGS (BackGround Story/System) are shared across platforms. This includes Fleet Carriers. So a CMDR on PC can interact with a Fleet Carrier that belongs to a CMDR on XBox, for example.

Xbox to Xbox OK. PS4 to PS4 OK. PC to PC OK. Cross platform will never happen. I love flying with friends on a PS4 without PC players with a lot of advantages killing console players.

if you want to get it for your friend, he can currently get it for free in the Epic store (free this week, he keeps it forever).

And I paid so much while others can get ED for free. Go for it bringing others into the game. Then again this is not an easy game to play. So what were the Devs thinking? ED is a very specific game most players having fun with other games won't get it. So does giving it away free helps to increase the player base? I think that most video game players won't like ED. We'll see...

Other games are doing 4K. Not so much with ED. Going wide screen in ED Frontier doesn't really support it. Other games do. Then again ED was a pioneer in VR support. Let's see how that works out in 2021. I bought a PS4 hoping ED would support Sony VR but alas no joy.

Don't know how much of the get free decision was in FDEV's hands and how much in Epic's.

I don't have a clue what the Devs are thinking. When Odyessy shows up there will be lots of failures messing up the game in many play styles. So make as many credits as possible before Odyssey shows up. Given Frontier's track record with every major upgrade it would be wise to have a lot of credits just in case. I've never seen a major upgrade to ED that didn't have major issues. Time will tell.

It was entirely in Frontier's hands because they own and are responsible for Elite Dangerous. I believe Epic offer cash to the publisher so that they can put the game on the Epic Store, in this case for free. For Frontier this is a win, win scenario, they get cash up front and more people with the opportunity to upgrade to Odyssey.

I also heard that Epic Store charges devs less than Steam. Like 10% vs 25% for Steam.
So ED will win more for every Epic ED client.
