Is ED unstable, or is it my PS5?

I am experiencing quite frequent random crashes when playing Elite Dangerous on my PS5. They may happen in almost any situation but by far the most common one is when jumping to another star system (just a second or two after the jump animation starts).

For quite long time I thought that it's just the game that's unstable. It's annoying, but I can live with it. However, lately I have started suspecting that could it perhaps actually be my PS5 console? (This doubt was elicited when I got a crash in a different game as well.) The console doesn't seem to be overheating (the air exhaust at the back actually feels quite cool, even after a long playing session), but there could be a myriad of other reasons.

Does anyone else experience frequent crashes when playing the game on the PS5? Is this normal?

As mentioned, the crashes are annoying, but I can live with them. However, it would ease my mind if I knew it was the game and not the console.

PS5 people have complained a lot about crashes, especially when jumping, when playing ED on a PS5
Presumably the PS5 compatibility mode doesnt work as good with ED as it may work with other titles.
And chances for any fix are rather nil

The (almost, I suppose) certainty that it's the game and not the console does ease my mind.

I happen to also have a PS4 Pro. Maybe I'll move to play the game there, if it's more stable. (I like the PS5 controller a lot more, but I'll survive.)

Thanks.

The crashes are not random during active CG weeks..... With 3 active community goals the PS5 networking is way way more unstable than when running on a PS4 that has a Native network, streaming and PVR chip that is not included in the PS5...

Both the hardware and software are to blame as the PS5 does not allow for longer network server issues and keep the game going...
The emulation of the PS4 is not 100% the same and you will get New PS5 actions... were the PS4 would Orange sidewinder error out the PS5 does not give the Game time to do so and the failing network code will just crash to desktop instead...

Getting to play on a server thats also handling the CG events for other users is BAD for both consoles IS way worse for PS5 users as you get a crashto desktop and not a game client error code..

This is Normal for the game on PS5 because the PS5 is not PS4 hardware... but its the same result because Fdev servers are triggering the crash to desktop menu...
The hole time there were no CGs running My PS5 gets ZERO crash to menus but the day CGs return on thursday.. CTM returns

Oh boy, is there a difference between PS5 and PS4 Pro. As in, a difference for the worse in the latter case. Not in terms of crashes, but in terms of game efficiency.

More particularly, the game stutters like mad on the PS4. Where in the PS5 the gameplay was pretty much always silky-smooth, on the PS4 it stutters constantly. After having played the game almost daily for over a month on the PS5, the difference is extremely noticeable when trying it on the PS4 for the first time.

I assume it stutters every time it needs to load some assets (hard drive vs. NVMe SSD makes a huge difference after all...) For example when jumping to a star system, there's a huge pause just as the jump ends. (Well, "huge" relatively speaking. Fractions of a second, but extremely noticeable. Could even be about half a second or so.) On the PS5 no such pause. And these micro-pauses happen all over the place (I assume almost every time it needs load something from disk). Heck, even just scrolling a commodities market list is slightly (but noticeably) stuttery on the PS4, while it's silky-smooth on the PS5. (And this is indeed the PS4 Pro we are talking about. I can only imagine how much worse it's in the original PS4.)

I suppose I'll have to make a choice between silky-smooth gameplay with the occasional crash, or stuttery gameplay with no (or very few) crashes (and a slightly worse game controller).

(Of course there's the third option of moving to the PC, but that would entail a bit more than just choosing which device to use to run the game, due to my setup at home. The advantage of the PC would be access to the newest expansions...)

NO CGs this week....
So I am expecting ZERO crashes to Menu or Desktop on PS5... so ill be able to stream and record game with out CTM/D bootiing the stream or killing the recording dead...

Your hypothesis about community goals making the game more unstable (on the PS5) might have some merit to it. Yesterday I decided to play on the PS5 anyway, actually partially to test this hypothesis, and didn't get a single crash even after several hours of playing. During the community goal (which I participated in), at worst I was getting crashes every 5-10 minutes (sometimes even in the main menu of the game after having restarted it and selecting "continue").

MAYBE if that's the case, it was because of more players being around you during a CG and being instanced with more of them or the game transmitting more information during a CG (of course only the devs know for sure).

It would be interesting if you could test the PS5 stability by going to other busy areas , going on community generated missions such as Distant World's or by having two full wings face each other in combat etc 🤔😀🤘...

And you need to do it With no players constantly moving to and from FC on the same instance servers...
Having thousands of people going FC to super cruse and more thousands going super cruse to FC will cause sidewinder game code errors on PC/PS4/xbox any way...
Which will trigger Crash to menu on PS5... Known PS4 issues have to be avoided..

For what it's worth, I play only in solo mode (including during this community goal). The crashes were not happening because my console was trying to keep up with other players. At least not directly.

(Why do I play in solo mode? Because I don't really understand how this MMO game is supposed to work, in terms of other players. In the beginning I played in open play mode, and I never saw anything from other players, except perhaps their ships sometimes flying by. I never saw any messages, or anything else. Nothing. I don't understand how this is an MMO game. But why did I permanently switch to solo mode? Because the only two interactions I ever had with other players was them attacking me for no reason whatsoever and destroying my ship in a couple of seconds with me completely unable to do anything about it. That's why.)

(Actually, when I participated in the previous CG I did switch to open play mode, just to see if there would be more interaction between players that I could see. In my very first trip I did indeed encounter another player. Who immediately proceeded to shoot at me, for absolutely no reason. I wasn't even carrying any cargo. At least this time I was able to escape before he destroyed me. But I am seeing a pattern here: Play in open play mode, get shot by other players, for no reason whatsoever. So much for it being an "MMO". At least it does have a solo mode, else I would have stopped playing.)

Indeed I really don't enter Open play myself* and unfortunately beyond the games' extremely flimsy crime and punishment system, there's nothing to stop players attacking others beyond their own moral code or lack thereof.

It's a real pity that this game isn't like The Elder Scrolls Online, which is Co-op PVE first in main gameplay areas with optional PVP areas which you have to choose to enter, then further still may choose to engage in PVP at all within those areas...

Unfortunately the best place and really only place to find still completely voluntary Co-op gameplay is with like minded players in player groups, which in particular on Playstation are based around one player hosting them, inviting then playing along with their friends (even among public groups such as Mobius, it's based on and limited by being friends with the host), so the groups are limited in size by the hosts PSN friends list, which caps out at either 2,000 or 20,000 players on PS4 (the host doesn't have to be online for the group to exist, unless the host chooses to shutdown a particular group, they are permanent and persistent)...

*Anyway the few times I entered Open I did so while never leaving the hanger of a large station and played exclusively in multicrew while chatting with like minded players and either while doing that or from the forums I found out about the strictly PvE only group Mobius, which I've been a part of for several years...

Indeed while the group used be very popular and particularly around CGs I used to meet a lot of other players, all of whom were friendly and no one ever shot at me or another player - doing so would see them quickly kicked out of the group whatever the circumstances...

While in recent years, sure the group has been a bit of a ghost town, but I still see the odd player there every few months, while clearly they're still added members because I'm in Mobius 2, while they're seemingly adding people to Mobius 3 right now.

While they have an application form to join the group and the process looks complicated, it's really not and I highly recommend doing so.

Here's a link to the group's registration page:- https://www.elitepve.com/page/join# 😀🤘

In early days I had a lot of fun playing alongside other players in the group, in particular during bounty hunting and Combat Zone CGs, often played in full wings, while other players were queuing to join the wings when players dropped out 😀 ..

Outside of specific combat, I quite often escorted other players on trade runs, missions and while they were mining etc.

As said even though the group has been pretty dead in the last year or three, I still have occasional interactions and meet ups with other players...

One day I was bounty hunting in a RES sites, when I saw quite frantic pleas for help from another player in chat, and after a bit of searching I found the other player, probably a new player, mining in a seemingly unarmed mining ship under attack from a single NPC pirate flying a Sidewinder!

I swatted the annoying fly bothering the player and then flew escort for them until they docked at a station with their load 😀 .

Within Mobius I made quite a few friends, though I'm not sure how many of them still play Elite, also I'm generally not online as much or at the same time of day as I used to be, but in there I joined several of their also PVE only groups, some of them having 30 or more players.

Indeed the reason many people choose to shoot at other players, whether "just because", while role playing as a pirate, because they're in "enemy" Powerplay factions, "enemy" CZ factions, for weapon testing or even consentual PvP are all banned within Mobius and most other PvE groups.

As said, if I met over 100 unique players (often the same players more than once), no one ever fired a shot in anger at me in a player group, so I can't recommend them highly enough, but of course as said, it'd be better if the Devs had built PvE modes into the game, but with like minded players and player groups, we can create the next best thing! 😯😀🤘 .

Anyway best of with your stability and fly safe out there! 😀

CGs are back, so are crash to menu/desktop.. .
Instantly the jump to super cruse is completed.. crash to menu ... at least unlike the PS4 were it would stay locked in the jump and freeze out the PS4 home button,, restart is quicker...
The thursday rush means no play.. in CG system. expect any instance that shares the same server to lag out. then crash to menu.

I'd say most of the crashes happen to me (ps5) in CG systems. It happens when I'm attempting to jump to supercruise, when I'm just kinda flying in SC toward a station, or when I'm being interdicted. Since 2017 I've blocked a fair number of griefers, so maybe that has something to do with it. Just this afternoon, I popped into Andavandul with a hold full of medicine and got interdicted immediately. Didn't even have time to identify the culprit before the game crashed.

Couldn't take a video of it afterward either. Something about PS5 not being able to record that kind of content. I expect a lot more of this in the next week, so I'll try to watch more closely for the common threads and keep reporting each crash.

I signed up for the community goal and started playing on the PS4. Man, the stuttering is highly annoying! But no crashes so far.

The best thing I found for my PS5 commander in terms of stability was unfortunately moving them to the PC. :(

The end of CGs on console looks to pointing to a way way more stable game on PS5...
Now that CG systems are going to be only in 4.0 this hopefully will separate the console user completely from the CG PC users...
So this Wil likely fix a lot of crash to menu as the feature that crashes the game wont be there to crash the game...
Thats one way for fdev to fix it..
Edit this will also fix the same CG issues that actually generate a sidewinder or cobra error code pn the PS4...

I would really like to keep playing the game on the PS5 (or even the PS4), but given that support has been dropped, no new expansions will be made available, and features (like community goals) will be dropped one after another, I think I'll try moving to the PC...

I understand that supporting multiple platforms is a ton more work for the developers, but come on... do they really need to diss console players in this way? It tests players' loyalty when their favorite (very modern) platform gets dropped. I would understand this if it were becoming an old and obsolete platform (like the original PS4), but the PS5 is very modern by any standard (and significantly better and more powerful than your average budget gaming PC).

On the plus side, I would guess that on the PC side there's a lot more interaction with other players, which seems extraordinarily lacking on the PS side. (Literally the only interactions I have ever had with other players is them killing me on sight for no reason whatsoever, even when I have no cargo, passengers, or anything.)

Yep, this is one of the reasons why I uninstalled on PS5 & regressed to PS4 Pro, the frequency and level of nuisance the crashes were causing was enough for me.

I then migrated to PC entirely, but haven’t been able to invest as much time playing as I used to.

At least here in Ireland, you CAN get one, though I don't think it's worth it right now and I'm in no particular rush to...

Firstly after more than two years on "sale", they should have come down by about €100, not having gone up €50!

Indeed they've been like gold dust to get for most of the last two years and though I recently I started seeing normal consoles only for sale, though for example only in certain Argos a two hour round trip to collect on weekdays only, which I work, though they didn't last long and again at €550 and €80 for new games, it's a bit much...

In particular very recently both Argos and Smyths have had the God of War Ragnarok bundle nearly constantly in stock, but no other PS5s for sale - though unless you're a massive GoW fan, I doubt you'd want it and it's €620, so not cheap...

Finally there are rumours of a new PS5 model launching early next year, maybe it will be better and cheaper - here's hoping!

So as said, I'm in no rush and will wait and see.. 🤔😯😀🤘 ...

(Also the exclusive games available for the system haven't particularly blown me away either, with most big games still coming out on PS4 and being nearly as good as their slightly tarted up "next gen" versions...

It's only now with the likes of the new NFS game where certain games which will surely run on PS4 with more effort and MAYBE just a few concessions are coming out "next gen" only...

IF we were getting a native "next gen" version of Elite with full Odyssey and "live" support, I might have a bigger reason to buy one, but as said right now, I'm waiting 🤔😯😀🤘)
