Is Elite: Dangerous for me?

Greetings. I have put some hours into the game since it went beta and I have to say that I am very impressed with the visuals, physics and the overall "feel" of space in ED. I am asking if this is the right game for me since progress seems very slow to me. This is not really criticism I suppose since the rate of progress is relative depending of how much time you have to devote to the game.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I am not really looking for a game that is a massive time sink where 50+ hours of game play are required to progress to the next ship or "level", like in EvE or other MMORPGs...my work schedule really does not permit for that.
Is this the intended rate or progress or has that yet to be determined since this is beta? Thanks.

Elite has always been about the long haul. Many people never reached Elite in the original game. Since FD are planning on running this game for a while I'd think it's going to be the same.

But, this game is not EVE. It's not about competition. There is no winning or losing. There is no endgame. It's just about doing your own thing. You should be free to putter about the systems trading in your little ship for as long as you like.

Otherwise, they're considering cash for credits, so you might have other options to catch up.

If you have to ask the question already... if it is already starting to feel like a grind... hmm..
Obviously it is not a finished product, but as was previously stated "Elite" status was not so easy to accomplish for a non dedicated player. If you are trying to play the game to "get to the end" then this may not be the game for you.. I am not saying that you can't get to "Elite" or that the game will be a grind, but I would suggest you wait until "Gamma" before making the decision. At least at that stage everything (prior to any of the expansions) that has been planned to be in and representative of the game in its entirety will be in. Then you can make the call of whether the game is for you or not. You've already committed the money so no use throwing out the baby with the bathwater, at least until you know the baby is dead that is ;)

For you, the focus might not be on combat or missions - but rather trading and exporation. Go out there, explore the galaxy at your own pace.

Like Frontier say - Infinite Freedom - it's up to you to play your own game in the sandbox they provide.

The advantage of ED, this is its duration. This is not a game that you throw at the end of 6 months. Build your own world for years, at your own rhythm

also remember that in the 'finished product' there will be plenty different career paths, Trader, Miner, Pirate, Bounty Hunter, Courier etc. and many MANY more places to go.

The current Beta (and the Premium and Alpha that came before) are just little stepping stones to what should turn out to be a very immersive and massive sandbox interstellar experience.

...my work schedule really does not permit for that.
Is this the intended rate or progress or has that yet to be determined since this is beta? Thanks.

well i have not played much since alpha and also do not intend to play daily or even weekly once the game is live.

the rate of "progress" has shifted hugely from the last premium beta build to now open beta.

in my view everything is now to cheap & cheerful (but this might be done to lower the "frustration" threshold and to allow for the testing of all ships etc by as many testers as possible)

regardless, i am sure the final balance of the game will be good enough for casuals. just do not be silly and expect to be the same as a dedicted gamer...

Good advice you got there OP :)

In summary, yes! Elite is for everyone... be them hardcore, can't sleep, 20+hrs a week space junkies, or, the casual pick up a game when your in the mood, hard working, social animals

I would just like to add: the "Dangerous" element may be that, after a while, you find your own goals and your own targets. You may meet like minded Commanders who ask you to fly with them from time to time & you may suddenly find rather than the odd hour, it's like a drug! You will want to fly more, it will grab hold of your dreams and like the best things in life, the more you put in, the more you get back :D

If you would like to join a group in time and just get an idea of the social aspect of Elite Dangerous keep an eye on fB Elite Dangerous Intel, as we'll be starting our private HQ shortly & organising a few test flights just to gently introduce members into group play.

Enjoy the journey Commander, casual or committed, for fun or as a career :/ there's always room for one more

Progress in ED is relative to your own ambitions & the time you can devote to achieving them. It's not a race, & you are not in competition with anyone, so you set your own goals & work toward them at your own speed.
I think that perhaps a different mind set is required than when playing "normal" games.

I do not for me think it should be a bad thing to take a long time to afford the next ship or upgrade and the reason I say this is the process to do this is for me enjoyable and not a grind and so I wish it to take a long time.

If it were too quick then for me the game would feel less not more.
