"Is Elite worth a try?"

Someone asked me on FB "Is Elite Dangerous worth a try? I did not longer pay attention after the no offline mode announcement."

I had to think a bit about my answer, and maybe it might help others who are asking themselve the same question, so here it goes ...

It depends a lot upon the player.
It is a wonderful game : the galaxy is quite literally all there, the flight mechanics, whilst not 100% physically accurate for gameplay sake, are the most enjoyable I have encountered yet in a space sim, combat is fantastic, and visually it is more often than not stunning (with a VR headset doubly so). Ultimately though, it is the same Elite as 30 years ago, albeit with multiplayer (kind of ... coming to that in a couple of sentences) : there isn't a lot to do if you don't spin your own story around your actions. The mission system is bland and generic, there is no real narrative, even with the faction based expansion game introduced with the latest patch (1.3 Powerplay). in short there is no actual goal. In that sense, it is a real sandbox : it just gives you the tool to "write your own story", but does no hand-holding and doesn't really try to push you in a certain direction. It might appeal to you (it works very well for me), or it might not.
As for multiplayer, it is, again, "different". I have been playing regularly since Beta (around september 2014) and have yet to fight against another player. Not that I am actively avoiding it, it just never happened. There are complaints about ganking on the (honestly awfully trollish) official forums, but I've yet to see that in person.
Pacific Interaction with other players has also been sparse. It is *very* nice to see player ships flying around, but there is no incentive to interact with them much. Personally, I like that, but again, YMMV.
so the TL;DR of all that is : worth a try definitely, no guarantee you will like it though.

First off, wait and see if they fix the bugs before you even think of getting it

+if you don't get excited just at the thought of flying around an accurate galaxy in spaceships, it isn't for you
+be prepared for a very long and steep learning curve
+it'll be a whole lot better if you have a buddy or two who starts playing with you
+keep a strong sense of perspective if you ever go near the forums...

If you want Multiplayer: Better use the money on something else (any multiplayer game has more players than this one lol). Game is empty and you see one CMDR every day if you are lucky. If you want MMO, search another game.
If you are in for the Singleplayer/Group experience and don't care about any strangers: Go for it it's a very good game.

Do or Do Not there is no Try

I think its definitely worth a try. Regardless of the current state there is still enough in there to get your moneys worth and its ever evolving. Compared to the majority of games at this price ED has far more potential to keep you playing long after youve finished the others.

Accurate galaxy... apart from the stellar densities, the galaxy we have in ED is nonsense

+be prepared for a very long and steep learning curve
+it'll be a whole lot better if you have a buddy or two who starts playing with you

Not sure why everyone always claims ED is so hard at the beginning. I found it particularly easy and was sitting in my Vulture after 5 hours of gameplay...

Some people, like me, played hundreds of hours already. Ckearly for people like us this game is eady to recommend. Others might like if this or that is added. And others will never like it. Can I recommend this game? To some, yes. To some others, no. The learning curve is mild to some, steep to others and impossible for some. I'd say if you enjoy the tutorial missions you should get it.

Yes, if you like space and the idea of flying a spaceship, Elite is definitely worth the money. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend it to someone who likes the genre. For those who want to play on their own - go solo. For those who want more danger, play in open. If you want PVP - it's easy to find. Also easy to avoid. You can explore, trade, mine, pirate, smuggle, bounty hunt and/or engage in regional politics. This game is HUGE and a TON of fun. And anyone who liked the original will surely love ED (if they're honest with themselves) - the scale, graphics and sound of the new game is a gazillions times better/bigger.

@OP. Good post. Rep +1. I like ED (have to be, 84-er - though I rarely play) but I won't/can't recommend it to friends or at work in good faith. Sadly ED has not matured enough to being able to do that. Perhaps when its more polished, so perhaps end of the year ;-)

I played the original and I think it released early, at the time I thought it would maybe be a bad idea but over time I thought would I prefer to still be waiting or able to play now as it grows around me. Its very easy to say you would rather wait when you didnt and couldnt.

In an ideal world it would have been more complete in december but maybe the next best thing is it releasing in december and it growing as I go along.

The game still offers more playtime than 99% of complete games.

I recommend Elite without reservation to anyone who is into PC gaming and who is tired of the run-of-mill FPS scene.

You know, I must say the thing that amazes me about the Elite forums is how many people insist that ED is not a good game for one reason or another, yet also insist on posting in the forums day after day...seems to me that even if they don't like the game, it certainly manages to occupy their brainboses enough for them to habit the forums... LOLOL that alone should be a good indication that ED is an intriguing enough of a game that evokes a strong emotional response from players

I think the forums should link your playtime to your profile then we could see the creditability of all these people complaining that have spent more time on this game in 6 months than being outside.

Have you been outside lately? It's lacking in content and hasn't been properly updated in months. Also if more than 10 people try to interact with you it gets confusing which is probably due to lousy instancing. Outside is very over rated and the lighting is OP
