Is everyone ready for the training-wheels to come off?

Many of the participants here are veteran explorers, but we also have a large number of newbie explorers too. As we leave WP2, our last space station will recede further and further behind us (until we build the new one in the core, but the same thing will happen again there too).

I feel like the expedition is just getting started now, since we've had the Omega Mining station, and the bubble, accessible for the last two weeks.

Are you ready? ;)

I am fairly new to exploration. A couple of months ago I tried a solo voyage to Colonia with disastrous results... but learned a lot. Then I did The Fatherhood's Lost Souls expedition, with much better results I am happy to say!

But this... this is something else. The scope is massive. But I have a ship with a 68 ly jump range, an SRV, and a fully fuctional Cote du Rhone fabrication unit, so yes, I am ready!

I've hardly been in the populated system. All this civilisation is too claustrophobic. I've been out exploring the neighbourhood! Got some very nice finds too. I'll be glad to leave the last traces of the human galaxy behind.

To new explorers: don't fear, the black is beautiful and addictive. Come the end of this trip, you won't ever want to go home.

Presuming WP3 is ca 5,000 LY from WP2, there's still stations within reach. That will change once we're past Sagittarius A* and going towards Beagle Point.

I am afraid I might sidetrack the thread slilghtly, if so I apoligize. Anyway.
I'm a n00b in every aspect except the fact that it's been a pretty long time since I got the game. Since then (well, I started out doing some pirate hunting, hauling and shorter exploration runs) I've just been sluggishly moving towards the galactic centre and being 1200 LY out I expect to reach Saggittarius tonight. I've been playing on and off and have, enbarrassingly enough, been on route for well over a year. Latelly I have started playing more and more though so I've moved 15000LY in about 2 weeks.
Since I learned about your epic journey I've been wondering if maybe I should wait there and hook up with you people when you get here. Is that feasable? And roughly how long do you expect it'll be before you get here?
Will the station you build be able to pay for exploration data? Will modules be sold there? My gear isn't optimal as I'm in an asp but only have a 35 LY jump range.

Lots of questions, sorry about that. Either way, good luck in your endeavour and maybe I'll catch up with you at half way. :)

The station which we mined minerals for is the basic station near Sagittarius A*. It will have the basics - commodity market, outfitting, refuel, repair, restock. No telling what modules will be available. Probably also Universal Cartographics even if I haven't seen anything concrete about the cartography section. If not, UC will most likely be part of the station's services once the second CG to fully outfit it is done - maybe sometime near the end of February or early March.

There are several stations all the way up to Colonia.

True, but most likely the expedition will now be heading to the galactic east, away from them.

Rohini (with a station) is one of the listed POIs along the way to WP3. But after that, I fully expect us to break away from the Colonia road. I don't have any insider information on the actual plans, but I did try to participate a little bit in the scouting event earlier in the year, which implied a more direct-ish route. We'll have to see how much zig-zagging was added.

I only have one question, since we now just left WP02; will I be needing a fuel scoop?

And will it be painful? I can can stand anything but pain.

1. Yes, unless you're going to be bold and crazy and try to somehow wing it.

2. Probably not. But who knows? There are some pointy spiky things out there. You might get a nasty cut. I hope you've had your tetanus jab.

We won't get to the Galactic Core until March, but you're more than welcome to wait there and take part in the CG once the fleet arrives, then join us for the long haul journey out to Beagle Point afterward.

Funny enough, and though you could say I'm a veteran, as I've been at it for quite some time (though perhaps a bit more in my own way than typical), I've been much more casual of late, not caring so much for the FSS gameplay, and having the relative safety of being near stations.

I've also been drinking a bit more, what with the holidays, the weather outside, and grilling. Makes for a bit of sloppiness from time to time while rounding stars, while fuel scooping and rolling to keep things interesting.

Sure, I may stop for an FSS once upon a time, we'll see, but snapping past and discovering a world via parallax on my way out through a system is just as, if not even more compelling than anything I could find using the FSS interface. For example, this also happens to be my submission for my fleet roster picture, which I happened upon via parallax, if I recall correctly...

This may sound cocky but honestly I don't find exploration that dangerous. I've been to Colonia and Sag A before and I was never in danger of dying, let alone being damaged. Haven't even used a single heat sink. The biggest danger, I think, is boredom and sleepiness because if you don't pay attention you may jump to a white dwarf or a neutron star and you won't react in time to steer clear before getting too close to them. Also, when landing on planets and not paying attention to how strong gravity is. But all of these can be averted by paying a bit of attention at all times. Yes, I've crashed on planets before (because of exactly the above reason) but was never destroyed in the process. Some hull damage, maybe. It has to be a serious impact to destroy the ship. So I wouldn't worry too much if I were new to exploration. What I still worry about, from time to time, is the loss of motivation. To go further (or, even worse, to go back) because I can't be bothered with it anymore, not having the ability to do anything else than to jump. But I think the schedule of DW2 is very friendly, a few thousand Ly every week is not much at all, and even though one doesn't play any more than the travel plan, it can be completed easily. The galaxy is incredibly huge but it's not as daunting to travel as it seems (or as it was just a few years ago).

I don't think that's cocky at all. Makes perfect sense. The only times I've come to any harm whilst exploring have been through lack of attention - and it is easy to let your concentration slip.

That said, from reading these forums, it does seem that we have quite a lot of pilots out there who learnt how to make a bit of money and buy an anaconda, but who never took the time to learn how to fly. I think everything in the galaxy can be dangerous if you don't learn how to fly.

However, we've got eight or nine months and 120000ish light years, anyone who doesn't know how to fly is sure going to have the chance to learn.
