Is FDEV the indisputable king of grinding?

Hello fellow Commanders.

I've been playing ED since 2016. It really picked up once i got my Rift and HOTAS in 2017. I've been playing MMORPGs since 2002, so i know what grinding is all about. Some do it good, and some do it bad. It has been my experience that most developers listens to their player base and make adjustments if something is wrong. FDEV have a few licenses that they can't implement their grinding mechanic in, such as Jurassic World franchise. Doing so would plummet the sales of said game.

Elite is their own IP, and they can do pretty much what ever they want with it. But why would they create a game, make it a pain to play, and then don't give a about those who play it? The game was also crowdfunded. ED could have been the greatest space simulator ever created. The 1:1 scale of our galaxy is a huge achievement in game development, yet they chose to make the game play as tedious and as boring as you can get. When players find ways to make it fun, they nerf it instantly.

I'm not sure what to make of Update 14. As ObsidianAnt, D2EA and several other content creators have already said. This is another impossible grind. It's like FDEV is literally trying to kill their own game. Why would they do that? True, the game costs to maintain, and they don't get cash from running a non subscription-based game. There are other games that still makes this work. Please, listen to your player base.

You clearly haven't played Warframe and Destiny 2. In those games grind is the way of life - the definition of gameplay. In Elite - grind is just there to define a progression. And this progression has it's limit. Once you unlocked something in Elite - it's forever. I don't think you truly understand the meaning of grind.

ED has been and still is arguably the best legit working space simulator ever created. How is it not? You know anything better? With a 1 to 1 galaxy scale exploration, with beliavable space and incredible visual appeal without wasting 10,000$ into jpegs? Nah, i don't think there is.

FDev are notoriously mediocre at game design at times (not all times), but they are trying. Do you even know that this galactic scale war of theirs is actually also a first in history of game industry?

They are effectively a "pathfinders" now. Give them a brake. No one ever tried to do anything alike with thousands of players being opposed to dynamic alien threat (AI NPC) on such an absurd scale both in space and in time that is needed to retaliate. That's entirely new for them and us. Give them some time, they will sort it out. Eventually.

The amount of repetitive tedium would make a free mobile game blush.

It’s hard not to come across as being anti-fun when for a long time it was the reasoning that activities generally regarded as being more fun should pay less than activities regarded as less fun. The idea is that you get “paid” with enjoyment. Their answer is not to make dull activities more fun, but rather to punish activities that are fun.

It’s just their thought process in order to force players into doing boring repetitive things out of necessity if they wanted to accomplish something they had set out to do. All that matters is hours spent in game.

Don't all games have a grind? Least those that are good.
I agree elites grind is huge. And grinding it is the wrong way we all know. Yet nearly all of us grind something or another. Ships, modules, rep, mats, whatever it is its a nessesary evil.
If someone in the gaming industry came up with a viable alternative to grind, that developer would be a legend.

My impression is that the latest update & promise of new in-game activities to do has brought back some players who haven't played for a while, presumably because they grew bored with the game back then.

If you didn't like the game enough to still be playing it as it was, nothing they add will change that.

There are some huge targets in this game, they are optional unless you are trying to compete with other players, in which case it's a level playing field because your opposition faces the same hills to climb.

Let the bubble burn :devilish:

Yes i have. I didn't find those P2W games very enjoyable.

Some do and some don't. Some make it good and others make it bad.

I enjoyed the game in the beginning. Exploring, and trading. The occasional combat. But no one likes what the game has turned into.

Be careful with "no one likes" statement. People are vocal not about what game has turned into, but rather about to what it has not turned by now.

We want it to be better than it is. And had it's not been good already by now, no one would've played it. We see the potential which FD can't unleash. That's what people are being vocal about and reason to upset most of them.

I understand what you are trying to say really. You just need to take a break from Elite i think. Elite is not the only game you know..

Take a break? I already did that for two years :) Thanks for understanding what i was talking about though.

It hasn't turned into anything different, there's just more things to do & maybe you feel you've been there, done that & are looking for something different now (ie a different game).

You liked it, reached a point where it got samey & stopped. You came back & surprise surprise it's still basically the same game it always was. The game didn't change, you did ;)

True. I just expected the game to have changed for the better. I was sadly mistaken.

Black Desert
Dark Age of Camelot
Asheron's Call
WoW didn't make your list?

It was common to have 30-60 minutes of daily routine activities before you continued on with whatever part of the game you were working on. I remember doing the same dailies for months to unlock certain items. And running the same dungeons over-and-over-and-over to get the super rare drops. Raids in Pickup groups brutal because unless you had already run it several dozen (...hundreds) times you were a noob to be chastised, ignored, left behind or kicked.

Darkmoon Fair. Holiday events with dailies to collect enough of whatever to turn in for your little trinket prize. Battle pets. Crafts and professions. etc. Multiply across your various alts.

I admit... I enjoyed it. Most of it. Repititious but fun.
