Is gold the most profitable material for straight trade?

Currently running a "triangle" between city, plant and mineral outpost making roughly 1k profit per gold unit and around 30k when mineral delivery missions pop

Is there anything more profitable in this sense?

Check the prices at each stop and compare to find most profitable run.

I'm making 1k/can profit on marine supplies(or whatever they're called) on a run from a ind station to an ag station.

If I had a big enough hold I'd be hauling biowaste as it has 800% profit/can on that run(12 buy - 96 sell).
Best item to trade depends on cargo hold available, capital available, buy and sell prices and to a lesser degree distance/time between ports.

Progenitor cells/performance enhancers pull nearly 1500 profit on the best runs. If you can do gold on the return trip, all the better.

It's all about how low can you buy and how high can you sell.
The expensive commodities usually have higher return profit per ton.

Say there is a system where you can buy Gold for 8800 credits per ton and next door there is a system where you can sell gold for 10540 credits per ton. Now that is roughly 1700 credits per ton you just made by ferrying Gold from one station to another. However if you buy gold at a 9999 price and sell at 10540 you will only make 541 credits per ton. It's decent money, but I would suggest looking for another commodity with higher profit margin.

Some of most profitable commodities are: Gold, Beryllium, Superconductors and Progenitor Cells. But when trading you must always look for something that is selling significantly bellow galactic average and then try to find a place that would buy at above galactic average.

As Zing mentioned it's a matter of finding good trade prices but the items themselves seem matter very little. Back in beta 3.05 my msot profitable route was Wolf479 <->mufrid
Buying Consumer tech at 6200 in Wolf selling at 7500 in mufrid and buying Indite at 1600 in Mufrid and selling at 2400 in Wolf (that made ~1300 and ~800 for both directions).

Overall the larger the value of the item the more potential price variation it can have. When visiting a system take a look at the trading list and see what items sell for >500 less than their galactic average. Those are the real 'supply' the system gives.
Then look at items that it buys at >400 than the galactic average ... those are items that it 'demands'. Try to match 2 or more (cycle) systems with buy/sell orders and you have a really profitable trade route.

Make sure to check the bulletin board before selling your stuff in commodities. Sometimes your specific thing will be listed as a mission and it will be WAY higher than your normal sell price.
