Is Horizons optional even if I bought it?

Can anyone clarify please. Reading all the reports of catastrophic performance problems the DLC brings into the game, I'm considering holding it off, worst case backing out.

The question is, will I even be able to hold off? And if so, will the 'main game' suffer regardless?

Don't you think it's a bit premature to be thinking this? The beta just released today, and it's the first version of it.

The updated planet visuals (and performance that goes with it) will be for Season 1 players as well, even if they dont have Horizons.

I assume you'll have both "Elite Dangerous" and "Elite Dangerous: Horizons" options in the launcher.

No you won't. You will have only one option: Elite Dangerous.

Absolutely agree but dives from 60 down to 40, in some reported cases 10 (a number that shouldn't even exist in connection with 'fps') is not something that I believe is fixable overnight, in a week, or a month.

Elite Dangerous Horizons 2.0
Elite Dangerous Ships Beta 1.5
& the single player combat option

Not even sure what the ships beta is.. :S

Regards performance:
I get very good performance, but for those that are struggling, it is only the first version and they have to tweak it to the bone.. no doubt..

Ship Beta 1.5 is for those who have access to Season 1 beta but didn't buy into Season 2 (Horizons) beta.

On Topic:

You'll be able to launch the 32bit version throughout 2016 cutting you off from Horizons content. Don't know how this will affect performance though.

Not sure I understand that, I think we get them all free, being a Premium Beta backer, not sure though. Either way Horizons is o.k. at the moment, lots of bugs though.

I played for a few hours last night and had no problems, I wasnt aware there were any (apart from some bugs of course).

Performance problems are only reported during planet approach and on the surfaces themselves. If you don't go landing your performance will be the same if not better.

Why would you need a client that does not include Horizons? It's not the existence of game files that causes the performance issues. It's the planet graphics rendered all over your frame buffer. Keep those our of your frame and Bob's your uncle

It's not very complicated. Premium backers/LEP owners get access to all versions. Everyone else gets the version he bought into. So if someone didn't buy Horizons beta he can only access the 1.5 beta while you are entitled to both versions.
