Is ingame voice chat system useful?

Do you see ingame voice chat to be useful at such a level that it would make people to use it rather than teamspeak or skype or what have you..?

Because I really like how you have to actually hail a ship + added sound effect to your voice and such. Also... I was thinking for some RP purposes; overall it should be more useful than ordinary text chat, no?

I was hailed yesterday but didn't have my headset (with mic) on.. first time ever and I couldn't answer :D
On 80% of my travels I have seen nobody, the few times I have seen others has been in stations close to the starting areas ( AIABiko ) and have managed to strike a few chat's (text) with other CMDRs, mainly waiting for the docking bay to be free. But overall I don't seem to be in the same instance as somebody long enough to even say Hi via txt, let alone warrant a voice chat. If / when my friends get into ED, then I will probably use TS etc.

I'm a grumpy git though :p

Q. If you are in voice chat, what happens if one of you drops out of supercruise and the other doesn't, is the chat kept open?

I would like this idea and more to be added at sometime in a not so distant update (within a year or so of release):

[REQUEST] VOICE PORTING - Voice over IP Comms Effects based on ones environment

This is a really good concept.

The current voice chat sounds too distorted for my taste - so much, that I switched to Teamspeak just for the sake of clarity. In the same system it should be way better and only get more distorted over several system jumps. Would add to the feeling of being far from each other too.

I rather like the in-voice chat sound but it's also true that we never use it since we have TS.

Might use it with other players ...

It would be nice if there was an "in-game" voice chat system. You know, a light would flash, say there's an incoming broadcast. You could choose to open the frequency, which would enable your microphone to respond.....however. Those who don't use a mic, would still have to respond via text, and no one has the time to type. It would be a hotkey response, to the most likely broadcast, "Surrender your cargo or die!" or just "Die scum!" or other highly aggressive comments that can't be repeated here. For myself, I'm using voice-command, so I always have a microphone, but I might have to disable it briefly to "chat". Wouldn't like that situation at all. A dedicated server, that would have all the local systems (like chat rooms), that as you went from system to system would move you between rooms....just seems extremely daunting (400 billion rooms). Not likely. And quite empty. I think that perhaps, a radio of sorts. Broadcasted from your ship, with frequency adjustment. You could choose to turn it on, or not. Or maybe you don't have one installed. A module for a short or long range/boosted broadcast system on your ship. With a frequency control. Certain frequencies could be setup as default ones, for in game law enforcement, station information, docking ques (WHICH REALLY WOULD BE NICE!! hint hint), emergency channels, ect ect.... Then other "open channels" or frequencies could be used by pilots in system, to communicate with each other. As a pilot who just entered the system, I could have the computer scan the frequency bands looking for any contacts, if they are in range of my system. Yes, I think range at this point, should be an issue. It takes a long time for "radio" to reach deep space so.....I think that would be an interesting feature. If you got to within "range" of a broadcast, you could listen to it on that frequency, respond via auto-response, or voice-chat at that point. It would seem that that SHOULD be possible somehow. But I'm not a programmer........just a dreamer. Commander Beetle Geuse.... signing off....

I've yet to play a PC game with inbuilt voice communications where players have not preferred to use a dedicated external program like teamspeak.

Crosstalk for teamspeak is a VOIP radio effects plugin.

https://github.com/thorwe/CrossTalk

It could create that Battlestar Galactica viper ship radio comms effects. or Military / Police comms effects.

I havent used voice with strangers in the game, but with friends its works pretty well for me. Also the 'clicking' effects CB Radio effect or whatever it is adds to the experience.

I just wish there was a volume slider per CMDR to adjust..
