Is it advantageous to max out engineering rolls per grade or not?

Engineering question: when you’re on a given grade, it unlocks the next grade at a certain point in that grades progression. Is there any advantage in making out your current grade before moving onto the next, ie does it give you less to ‘do’ on the next grade?

Not when I tested it in the 3.0 beta. When you move up to the next grade, it jumps up to the same range regardless of maxing out the previous grade or not.

Save the materials, jump up a grade as soon as it becomes available.

That is a good thing about the new system. The lowest G5 roll will always be better than the highest G4, so move up as soon as it will let you.

The negative side effects are static with the current system in each grade. So, if you jumped to G5 you'll get the standard negative effects for that grade. If you max G4 and then start rolling in G5 you'll get the same negative effects.

Only if
it is the highest Grade you have access to
It is the highest grade you can afford the time (ie missing the materials for the next)
The Negatives of the next grade are counter to your build, ie say for drive tuning the loss of optimum mass tips you over for the current mass of your ship

Depends on the module... Maxing out G5 is usually the best option, but there are exceptions, like Power Plants. Maxing out a lower grade is beneficial if you can squeeze just enough power out of it, without going to the next grade which would result in worse heat efficiency.
