Is it all about the internals?

So, I've finally made enough cash using the starting Sidewinder and bought myself a nice Cobra. Yey!

I even bough some weapons (not the best, as I'm far from rich, but it's fitted with 2x C2 gimballed multicannons and 2x C1 fixed burst lasers. I wont lie: I took the weapons setup from this site: http://barkandbyte.blogspot.com/2014/08/byte-elite-dangerous-ship-comparison.html About the only thing that's annoying are the lasers - the hardpoints are so far apart, that I can either hit a target with the left, or the right, but never really both at the same time. Or did I do something wrong with this? Oh, and I've also got a K-Warrant scanner.

Aaaaand now, I... feel weird. On one hand, when I engage the same enemies as before, I tear them to shreds in no time, but those are Sidewinders, Eagles and possibly other Cobras - novice or something around that. I did get engaged by something better equipped and my shield rather quickly went POP, much to my dismay.

So, I'm coming here for help, as I've only got a vague understanding on how proper outfitting should be done. Is this all about internals? I THOUGHT the Cobra had a good shield (I remember reading words of praise about it, compared to say, the Viper), but it really went down fast once I was engaged by two competent pirate Cobras and had to flee. I've also seen videos of people engaging an Anaconda, taking a barrage of it's fire and their shields seemed unmoved. So... what's the deal here? I'm clearly doing something wrong, and I'd like to know what this is.

The stock shield is ok but you'll want to upgrade it asap. The NPC's attacking you could have stronger weapons than your used to also which will bring your shields down quicker as well, and also the fact that you were attacked by multiple hostiles. Good luck CMDR and keep at it, once you get some upgrades to the cobra it becomes a serious peice of kit!

Stock shields (what it comes with) aren't great. Upgrade potential is good.

Read up on Equipment - learn about ratings (A-E) and classes (1-8).

Then all will become clear.

Sounds like you already know what's wrong and how to fix it :)

That E (or is it D?) rated shield is rubbish. You're an easier target than you were before, and less nimble. Since you'll take more hits now, you'll want to upgraded your shields and make look into a cell bank.

Grats on the purchase, she's a great ship if you use her right. A bit heavier than you're used to, so watch out for the extra breaking distance. Enjoy!

Thanks for the replies. The stock shield is a C4 rank E shield generator. Any "new" shield seems to be worth a LOT of credits. A rank B is worth more than the ship itself! :(
I also seem to be running out of power, to actually POWER a better shield generator. I think I need to invest in a new power plant first. Yikes. This is starting to look... dangerously expensive.

This is way people fly vipers.
