Is it always illegal to shoot skimmers?

Ok, quick question..

Occasionally when roaming around on a planet, I would encounter Skimmers guarding abandoned cargo or something like that. I generally avoid anything illegal so I would select the Skimmer and see if it was 'wanted' or not, if so I would engage them.

Since 3.0 dropped, Skimmers are no longer listed as Wanted. Does this mean I will always get a bounty if I attack them?

Thanks.

Some are legal, some are not. But it was certainly a 'thing' in 2.4 that random planetary POIs were ALWAYS illegal skimmers that you could claim bounties from. If it is now a thing that they are ALWAYS legal (and therefore not wanted), then I would suggest that is a bug, because planetary POIs are supposed to be candy, not risky propositions (in the most part).

To be clear, they just don't show 'Wanted' anymore.. I have not tried actually shooting them.

I always assume if they're not wanted then it's illegal, but since 3.0 I have not seen a single Wanted Skimmer.

I consider it a bug that they no longer show affiliation or legal status. Only way to know if it's legal to shoot them is by checking the cargo they guard. Legal salvage means the skimmers are wanted and you can fire away.

This is really the only way of being sure what they are, wanted or not...I would say thats constitutes as being bugged. If in doubt, then do a 180 and keep going till they go away and put it down to experience ^

I haven't seen a single "wanted" skimmer since 3.0 has dropped - and I've seen a lot of skimmers [and not via the exploits either]

Bug or undocumented design change? Probably a bug.

But - has anyone actually seen a "wanted" skimmer since 3.0?

I've noticed all the planetary scan missions I do, the skimmers aren't illegal and still give you 1,000 credit each, despite you getting a fine for being in the trespass zone and a bounty for scanning the terminal. But the skimmers there seem to all be fair game...

that's because skimmers are banned and considered OP
they can blow up your ship easily but you can't kill them back..

Noticed that too.
It is quite convenient, you get a 500 bounty for trespassing, and to offset it you can hand in 2000 credits bounty.

But rather strange since 3.0.3 dropped I have not seem planetary scan missions where you would not get caught for trespassing, before that there were a few around.
Had them mainly in the Gang Yun system, often with the added bonus of a wanted ship parked right next to the base. Now that was a convenient income boost. :)

This alone is solid evidence that its a display bug not an allegiance bug.

Interesting, I'll just use the status of whatever they're guarding for the time being.

Hopefully, this bug gets fixed at some point. Thanks everyone for the info, I appreciate it! o7

So, you want to run through the galaxy wantonly and indiscriminately killing everything you see without consequence?

I can't wait until this guy moves up to PvP...

Good idea. Thanks for the info. [up]
I was previously just shooting and seeing if I got lucky.
