Is it better to have a lower rated shield generator with boosters?

I've been playing around with ED Shipyard and came out with 2 different vulture configs. The primary difference is that one has a 5B shield generator with no shield boosters while the other has 2 shield boosters with a 5D generator (I also lose a heat sink launcher with this config but I don't care). Both have almost identical power usage but the 5D generator w/ boosters config has a slightly better overall shield (383.95 MJ vs. 367.96 MJ). This also lowers my mass and rebuy cost which are pluses again. So my question is, is the overall shield value the only thing that matters? Or is a 5B generator still somehow better than a 5D w/ boosters?

B modules are the heaviest of the lot, but also the most resilient to a direct module attack. That being said, no one is going to target your shield generator ^.^

I'd go with the D version, it has the better overall shield with the boosters, also it will increase your jump range.
 
Boosters also increase the recharge time don't they? Or is it just that they fill at the same rate but have an extra 20% to fill so it takes longer to get fully charged?

If it's slower to recharge then the larger generator would be better for CZ's or high intensity bounty hunting.

Ah I forgot about module strength. But you're right, that doesn't matter with the generator. So in general, as long as your ship mass is below the optimum shield mass, then the most MJ's always wins no matter how you get there?

The latter.

500 Micheal Jacksons of shield strength will recharge the same, no matter how you got there.

It's my understanding that they only increase recharge time to 100% because you have that extra to fill. Everything I've read is shields regen at 1MJ/s as long as you have energy in the SYS capacitor regardless of anything else.
 
The recharge rate is the same, there's just more to fill up with boosters installed.

I don't believe that a bigger power plant or power distributor changes anything in this matter.

Alternatively, you could use some 5D thrusters (which are still plenty good for a vulture) and then you could have a 5A shield installed, bringing your shield strength up to 470,35 MJ ^.^
