Is it just me or is the game getting worse and worse?

Hello, I was away from EDO for about a year. When I returned, I was (unpleasantly) surprised to see that the game runs much worse than before, which is commendable, considering that EDO has never been an example of stability and performance.

Is this just my perception or is it a trend that other players have noticed?

As for my computer, I far exceed the minimum and maximum recommendations.

Edit: The problems I face the most are unexpected game crashes (output to desktop), freezing, and server connection issues.

I play via Steam (bought the game in the Frontier Store and later linked my Steam Account), because I've switched over to Linux as my daily drive OS about 1.5 months ago, which the game was not specifically designed for as an operating system, at least regarding the Steam Storepage.
Considering that I do not play on the OS intended for the game, I have not seen any CTDs (crash to desktop), freezing or other issues.

The first issue I've had was after the recent update where i was not able to connect to the game servers for about 30 minutes after update launch, which was probably not due to my setup but the amount of concurrent players trying to establish a connection.

So in short, it might just be how your system specifically works together, combination of hardware or simply that you play via Odyssey (i'm assuming you do), which has had stability issues since launch although updates and fixes did remove most of those.
Question:
1. Exceeding even recommended specs is not a guarantee for performance as I'm sure you know considering your experiences in ED performance, so what hardware exactly do you use if you don't mind me asking?

2. Are there any heavy weight performances or tasks running in the background while you play?

3. Do you experience similar problems when launching via Horizons?

That might shed some light on how or why it is possible for you to have worse experienced performance than before.

Just you.... had some minor connection issues on patch day - same ol bug they've never fixed (crash when EXITING the game on maint. days)
Planetary Rings going missing (old thing I guess)

Beyond that... no issues here.

Intel Win 10 Pro Nvidia GPU with 64GB RAM here.

No Elite: Dangerous stability issues on any of my systems; AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, or any permutation of these platform/GPU combinations, on any version of Windows.

Odyssey performance has always been relatively bad, but has improved significantly since it was launched and modestly over the last year. It's entirely playable on fairly modest hardware, even if it's significantly slower than Horizons when rendering equivalent scenes and overly CPU limited in large settlements and at surface conflict zones.

Your issues sound like a problem with your particular configuration.

EDO performance has not changed much for me except for the initial improvements. With some updates it dropped a bit, with some it got better a bit, but nothing big.
As for the stability: it is less stable than EDH was/is, but compared to other games nothing to be worried about.

It's not gotten much worse except for the occasional common crash bug that gets hotfixed like the "staring at the crotch panel crashes the game" bug.

But it's not gotten better in terms of performance for several patches either.

It's similar for gameplay except new fun stuff is still added while the old issues still linger and the game overall dies by a thousand nagging issues. This isn't to detract from the new stuff just to point out that gameplay/balance related old issues rarely get addressed.

I think I get the occasional crash but performance has been a steady 56 to 60 fps throughout the game. I will be getting a 4070 ti this month, so it will be interesting to see if I start getting more crashes when I upgrade.

Wow... Worse than a year ago? There ain't even a question that the game is much more bug free and stabile than a year ago. Maybe you should start by asking for help instead of lashing out...

I get the occasional freeze when switching between cockpit and on foot scenes (which does annoy in combination with the "everything is gone when you relog" anti-cheat ). But otherwise everything runs flawlessly, no lag, no notably poor performance, no crashes apart from the one mentioned above. My system is beefy, which may help with that, but on my side Odyssey looks mostly "fixed".

Definitely gets better and better for me. Performance, crashes and bugs getting fixed.

Obviously not perfect yet, but uncomparably better than 1 or 2 years ago!

My PC is nearly 5 years old.
The "newest" piece is an nvidia gtx 1080 ti.
I can play all aspects of odyssey with no problems here.

There was a big patch.
important is to clear the directX shader cache and verify the game files after a big patch before playing.

Check VRAM allocation. It's possible some updated U16 assets are large enough to cause problems with borderline setups.

Running pretty much the same old setup, no issues even in on foot stuff.
