Newcomer / Intro Is it possible to choose where a new Commander starts the game?

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place for this question but here goes...

I haven't played Elite for a long time, but my brother is about to begin, with his kids hopefully. He had the original game when he was their age now. But he hasn't seen the new version. When he spawns as a new commander somewhere, is there any way to get him to start where I am, or is it just random?

...i'm assuming the latter. Thanks!

Well the good news is, he will start somewhere within the "starter systems", not just randomly somewhere in the galaxy! As I recall, there was one start point for people with horizons, and a different one for people with the basic game. I never went through the starter systems, so I can't swear to that, just what I seem to recall when the starter systems were added to the game.
Regards

Yeah, like Habu said, he will start it the "starter area", which is good news for him but bad news for you as you won't be able to go to him (starter area is blocked to more advanced players), so if you want to meet, he's going to have to start alone and upgrade his ship a little bit before he can get to YOU.

But if you are in each other's friend lists, you will see each other on the galaxy map and meeting up is easy after he's left the noob zone. You can play in Private group if you don't want to risk Open.

..........

Well there is no reason that the new commander cannot meet up in a nearby system, winging-up for tips, tricks, mining, RES etc etc - just so long as the new commander doesn't dock outside the starter area they can go back in.

Technically there is, because I don't think a completely stock Sidewinder can actually jump far enough to get out of the starter area.
Naturally, all it takes is to complete one mission and buy a D-rated FSD, but still.

Actually there is - Hollatja - that is less than 6ly from Dromi and I went there in a stock new start sidewinder. (I don't know if there are others, that is the only one I used.)

Thanks for all the replies and tips. I remember now that you start in a less dangerous area but I didn't realise that it was new commanders only. Oh well, I will head towards them and form a wing as soon as we can.

Thanks Commanders!

When I started playing Elite in 2017 there were two start options. Where you were depended on whether you opted to have a SRV in your Sidewinder or not.

I restarted when I found I could have had a SRV! Haha, how quaint :)
