not quite sure what you mean, do you want to add a shortcut to open the launcher or the client?
You have to authenticate to the server before you can play. So you can have a shortcut to the launcher, but not the executable.
When you directly start the Drive:\Users\>Username<\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1000\EliteDangerous.exe you get a message asking to start it via the launcher. Probably for logging in as already mentioned.
And solo offline mode ?
I mean so that you can add a command line to the elitedangerous.exe

and thought I might try this for ED because I get a lot of stutter...even though I'm pretty sure ED is DX11 only.

That fix only applied to Unity engine games. Elite has its own engine - Cobra.
Yep, I thought it might be worth a try...didn't have much hope though. Never mind
