Is it possible to make good money without trading?

I'm not really in to the whole trading thing. I play in RIFT and so more drawn to the combat and bounty hunting.
I've been playing since about October and tried pretty much all of the trades and bounty hunting is what I want to do.

But how to make millions?

I tried one of the assassination missions and got my butt kicked in my modestly upgraded Eagle.

I don't want to be a mega millionaire but would like a better ship with better weapons. My best reward in a 2 hour session was about 80k credits but haven't got anywhere near that since.
It might be that i'm just not very good at the game, but at this rate it's going to take several years for me to ever afford one of the more capable ships.

Any suggestions?

You wont get rich but you should be able to do better than 40K per hour, even in an Eagle.

Fight the small ships solo, and watch for big ships being dogpiled by security forces and get in there for the kill once it only has a few percent left in its hull to grab the big bounties.

Conflict zones are worth a look too since they are target rich, in an eagle you'll be better off with low intensity (Unless you are badass at combat), again fight the small ships solo and steal the kills on the big ships whenever you see the opportunity.

Thanks RuleV, I got myself an interdictor and a K Warrant scanner last night so will see if this helps with general income.
I did jump in to a high intensity combat zone very early on but didn't hang around for long.

I currently make approx 320-360k an hour from mining. It's not a fortune but it's a damn sight more fun than trading.

imo of course.

in the past: not really
in the current patch: things are looking better
in the future: most likely

trading will likely ALWAYS be the highest earner, though. and should be.
without rich traders pirates have nothing to do.
without pirates bounty hunters have nothing to do.

miners and explorers don't bother anybody :p

That's not bad going!
I did try a bit of mining but found myself getting distracted by wanting to kill pirates.
Perhaps a few more high bounty NPCs just so I can kit out my Eagle with some nice beam lasers and better shields.

Oh, and actually got killed by an NPC which I think is only the second time that has ever happened. Having not seen a single heat seeker since I started playing...one came out of the blue and I thought...right, time to get some chaff. I'm quite glad that happened, the game would be a little boring if all NPC were virtual sitting ducks.

By the way... Julien with Oculus is awesome !!! Make me laugh .hehe.

Thanks....too much spare time at work!

Any suggestions?

Station missions helped me out when just starting. Even the "deliver this doc to this station for 1,000 credit" style mission covered my gas when combined with others (and does not use cargo space). My secret was to combine missions logically. Never take a smuggling mission and resource delivery in a system that scans you. I never left the dock bay unless I could make some sort of profit.

Investigating USS made me 200K an hour on average. I sold off the extras I found for free money. Once I didn't have time to sell them off and when I came on the next day I found three missions in the BB I was able to fulfill from my cargo. Lots of free money there.

Got a Cobra and Hauler doing USS alone. It's a steady low risk income.

New Dev update talks about balancing all professions so combat pilots are not forced to boring trading to make it to the next ship. Very good change.

You can make decent money hunting at RES, 300K per hour more if you hunt big game. Not trading money obviously but then again, what is? :)
