Is it possible to "mod" the sound in elite?

I have truly enjoyed tinkering with the HUD colors - and I was wondering if there is any means to tinker with the sounds of elite.

For example, I would replace the annoying system scan honk with something more pleasing (since I hear it soooo many times), and I would make the FSD system jump sound a little less explosive (since I hear that soooo many times).

Any insight would be appreciated.

The sound design is genius, no doubt about it. However, like you I would like the option to modify certain sounds, have always done so in other space sims in my collection. I make do by adding certain sounds through voice attack, unfortunately I am still quite limited as to what I can do. I can't see the devs changing anything, the game doesn't have a folder full of wav files that can be easily swapped out.

A note on the FSD jump sounds, the sound team actually toned it down a lot not long after gamma release (to my horror) The sound used to be an incredibly bass heavy sonic assault on the ears and body, glorious if you had a decent surround system combined with a bass transducer. Now it is merely a whimper.

Elite has the best sound of any game I've played. With headphones it's like woah!
But i would like to have my own music in supercruise. Also I'd like a gentler docking sound. It's like someone hitting an empty oil drum with a cricket bat.

I would REALLY love to change the scan honk to something different. Of all the great effects in the game, that one is most annoying.

I agree about the system jump noise. Annoys me a lot. Apart from that I think the sound is fine. Although I'd like the option to turn down engine noise. And to turn that srv scanner up louder.

I do miss that. Even my smallish Logitech 5.1 system would rattle the windows when the FSD kicked in. Glorious indeed. I would love an in-game toggle to bring that back. :D

3 changes for me....

Make the USS sound louder and different and adjustable so when searching for a USS you can turn it up.

2nd is make the damn SRV scanner sounds LOUD!!

Lastly, make the 'Slow Down' warning sound hugely different to the 'Safe Disengage Now'.....Too many occasion to note when not 100% concentrating coming into a disengage at station, i have hit the button only to find i am 100's of Km's short, and realise i pressed the button on the damn useless 'Slow Down' warning! The Slow Down is useless anyway!

Same here, it sounds ridiculous and out of place especially when you consider the care and crafting that has gone into the rest of the ship sounds.

I can only assume it was a Friday afternoon job, all the audio team were down the pub and the work experience guy was left to his own devices.
When they returned drunk and heard it they just said "yep, that'll do" and so we have what we have as no sober person would have allowed that through to the game.

Literally the ONLY thing I'd consider modding is the "scan honk"

Everything else I just set the audio options for max dynamic range, spend a few minutes playing with the EQ on my mixer console and sink into the soundscape provided by 8" studio monitors...

That honk is the only clunker in a truly amazing sound design. ED's audio is the sort of thing that makes a sound guy like me go "Damn, I wish I'd done that..." quickly followed by "I want to work with these guys one day!" There's so much that can be "professionally appreciated", from the truly awesome composition to the way it's been engineered so well that you miss nothing in the way of audio quality whether you are feeding a consumer-level onboard DAC or a pro rig, whether you're driving headphones, the tiny speakers built into a laptop, any surround rig no matter the size of the cones involved or a set of pro-quality monitors. Anyone who hasn't actually tried to do it has no idea how complex and subtle a task it is to achieve that in a master mix. My hat is definitely off to the audio team at FDev.

I'd be happy just to have better control of all audio levels so I can listen to music and still have the sound effects that I like audible and other sounds near muted. So does anyone know how to do this? Using the game's audio options menu is not up to what I require. Badly need better range/value adjustments of individual effect/sounds. I especially want to hear NPC comms and wave scanner audio above my music, which is already set at its lowest level. My Logitech Z906 pump out decent bass but the audio levels of ED's sound effects levels shared with an external music player like Winamp is terrible for when you want to have anything other than the its original game music playing.
