Is it really really hard to get ranks with Empire, or is my profile broken / bugged?

Guys! I don't claim that ranking is bugged for everyone! But I've been an "outsider" with the Empire for a very very VERY long time now. An OUTSIDER! I realize that further ranks can take time, but to not get even ONE rank all my time playing ED (I bought it when it came out)?!

Seriously, I feels like madness.

I am sure that hanging out in their space and doing your own thing does almost nothing for your rank. I made Serf about 8 months ago and then did nothing to improve my rank for 7 months but I continued to hang out in Empire space. You need to step up and actually help them out by either doing missions that they want / need done from the bulletin board. When you select these missions you need to make sure that you are actually helping Empire affiliated factions and not the opposition and I check the affiliation before accepting any mission. I got my first rank by going into a CZ and by chance I selected the Empire faction and when I came back to port I was offed an ascension mission. About a month ago I decided to chase some rank and I made Baron a couple of days ago.

Even if this is the case... In my time outside of Empire space I managed to get a rank or two with the Federation, and that was by doing random missions picked up here or there. I feel I did the missions for the Empire with the same "frequency", but I spent a whole lot more time in Empire space, so I think I did, on the whole, a whole lot more Empire missions than I did Federation mission.

In any case, I raised a ticket - something smells wrong.

Either do donation/charity missions or combat missions (you need high combat rank for the combat missions). Find a system with either 2 or 3 empire aligned minor factions, preferably with high system influence %.

It's a grind but it's possible and working correctly as far as I can tell. The experience gained seems tied to the money you donate/make. Donating lots of expensive cargo and turning in high-reward combat missions seems to rank you up faster

Ah, let me see now, *adjusts monocle*, Commander Shaamaan, is it not?

Yes, I see from our files that you are a Federalist spy. The Assault ship was the first clue for the brilliant minds who work in Imperial counter-espionage. A more subtle sign was your public confession of doing missions for the scum of the Federation.

Surely you realised that one must first own an Imperial Clipper before an Assault ship, and never the other way around? I myself use one as a runabout, but I am a high ranking aristocrat.

Case closed.

Cordially,

Duke Tomsk the 192nd of Damona; Marquis of Atlantis; Earl of Ipilyaqa; Count of Xi Hara; Viscount of Lumastya; Baron of Marrallang; Lord of Cernobog.

The natives are getting restless in the colonies, sire.

First they formed that silly Federation of theirs, and now this... May I suggest we put this Shaamaan character to walk the plank?

A capital idea, Commander!

Do join me in a glass of Lavian brandy, to better enjoy the spectacle.

I hope they fix it up for you quickly if you do have a problem with your account.

Assuming I am combat oriented, unwilling to take missions to kill authority, traders, civvies, and not ever going to do the "log out and back in to refresh missions" trick, how long should it be taking me to get a rank up from Knight or Midshipman?

Currently getting a charity or two and 3 to 6 hunt-kill missions a day, played every second day. Is this going to take a few months, or what?

Hah!

Another Federalist running dog, caught red handed.

When will they ever learn?

I've spent months and months in Empire space doing my own thing - spot of mining, bit of bounty hunting and non-mission trading. In that time I made millions - no, make that 100M+ credits. Got no rank progression missions, though. Today, I decided to do nothing by minor faction missions in Empire space. They pay very little, but was offered a promotion mission from Baron to Viscount after a couple of hours. As others have said, you must do missions. And need to recognize that bounty hunting and charity missions seem to do a lot more for rank progression than delivery and fetch missions. If you've been focused on making money during your time in Empire space (e.g. trading normally, running Haz RES or CZs) chances are that you haven't done much to gain rank at all. Gotta accept and carry out those crappy little minor faction missions....

Well, OBVIOUSLY you'd think that, seeing as you got my ED name wrong... :p

Your impertinence is duly noted, Commander game CMDR name.

You would do well to remember that not only am I a Duke in the glorious empire, but I also hold the sacred office of Keeper of the Emperor's Lavatory Paper. Do not bandy words with me, Commander, or those fine Gutamaya ships will remain forever beyond your grasp...

Dammit, I'd rep you again if I could! Thanks for making my day. :)

Doing long range delivery missions, without logging in/out. I was stacking 10-15 per time (going round 4 stations collecting the missions) plus any charity that spawned and would get a naval promotion mission during each batch of 10-15 missions for the lower ranks (up to Lord).

Just out of curiosity - where do you go for long range Empire delivery missions?

Down at the Lord's Club I've heard several Dukes and Princes discussing the great Imperial long range delivery missions opportunities in, if I'm not mistaken, Sagittarius A.

Tell all your Federal friends about it.

greetings,
King Spiridon
