Newcomer / Intro Is it true that PvP and PvE build should be very different?

Hi cmdr's,

A short question. The way I look things, it looks like you should have very distinct build, depending whether you're doing PvP or PvE.

I completely understand that a build working in PvE is not enough in PvP (look way more difficult)...but then, isn't a good PvP build enough for PvE? I mean, if it's working good against other player, it should work perfect against NPC, right?

To be successful in PvP, you need cunning, skill and experience to be able to overcome your opponent/s.

What do you mean by PvP? You can have a lot of fun chasing down gankers in a Sidewinder with enhanced thrusters and an FSD interdictor, or you can fight whole factions by flipping system states with a T9. Some people like to blow up unsuspecting commanders speeding into stations by crashing into them with a shieldless Sidewinder. Others like to take a fully engineered Corvette or FDL to Diaguandri to blow up unsuspecting mostly harmless noobs upgrading to their first ship. Then there's the people that take their combat ships to the mining hotspots to disrupt people from earning too many credits or pirateing them when they take their void opels back to sell. every activity requires a specific build to be successful.

Likewise for PvE, you need specific builds to carry out specific tasks

Like everything in the game, the more engineering, guardian stuff, ships, etc that you have to choose from, the more optimal you can make your ship for the task in hand.

Thanks for your answer cmdr :)

My question was more: If I have a fully upgraded/modded/fitted FDL that work great in PvP, it should then be OP to fight NPC in HAZRes or CZ, isn't it? If not, why something good against player could be not effective against NPC?

But the way you answered seems to more say "it's not only a matter of wining or not a fight, it's more a matter about why and what you're figthing", right? Then make sense that fighting in CZ or HAZres does not have the same requirement than chasing gankers.

I was also wondering: is PA's OP for anything? I often see that people advise using PA vs player but Laser/MC for PvE. Is that true?

When fighting against players, you normally only have one ship to kill, so you can choose high damage weapons and special effects appropriate to your combat strategy. In RES or CZ for PvE, it's better to have weapons that don't need ammo so that you can stay as long as you want, depending how long your play sessions are. Like everything, it depends what you want to do. Some people are happy to go to a Haz RES, kill one ship to practice their use of particular weapons, then go back to get more ammo. Others want to maximise their profits, so want to stay as long as possible. There's no answer to any of these things. It's all personal choice.

I'm using a Corvette for massacre missions. Uses no ammo, it kills NPCs fast. If I used it for PvP it would get trashed in seconds.
If I used my PvP ships for massacre missions, it would work but it would be slower on kills and run out of ammo.

Either that or you do what most self-proclaimed PvPers do - go to Deciat and pop noobs all day long in your easy-mode G5 FDL. This requires about the same amount of cunning, skill, and experience as waking up in the morning.

Said like that, that totally makes sense, thanks.

So it's not especially a matter of being good versus NPC that a PvE is made for, but rather good at killing NPC :).

Thanks for your answer ^^.

So I'll keep my current Krait Mk2 and Clipper for PvE (+, later, a Vette) and I'll rebuild my Vulture and FDL for some PvP. Never tried it, never use PA, so I guess I'll need some (a lot!) practice :D

Killing Ganker, not poor player* !

Got rekt in my unarmed DBX going to Deciat...On that day, I swear "I'll be back for some revenge". Need to train and fit, but one day, I'll avenge some of these poor souls taken away in this Deciat system !

Don’t make light of that, I often struggle with waking up successfully in the morning, hmm! maybe that’s why I have never been tempted to try my skill in Deciat.
