Is it wise to go AFK in Open?

Going AFK is fine as long as your ship is in a safe place. Experience teaches the player what's safe & what isn't depending on the system you're in. Sometimes the game just has to take a back seat to RL & you have to accept you might return to a rebuy screen.

It's never wise to go AFK.

When I did Smeaton runs during the high paying passenger missions, I set course to Smeaton and walked away.

One time when I came back my Tradeconda was sitting shield-less with 40% hull at about halfway the distance to the station.
I was really confused about what had happened. I mean I wouldn't have been surprised to come back to a rebuy screen, but this?
Had to look at the comms to see that apparently some pirate interdicted me, system security arrived and chased them away (or destroyed them) 600'000 ls
out from Smeaton. :D

Bit confused here, but how was this CMDR AFK ?

They submitted to the interdiction and, after a few volleys, boosted away and jumped out.

If they were AFK, the interdiction would have been longer and there would have been no reaction to being shot at.

Unless I've missed something ... ???

i was wondering that myself. There's a pause of about 1-2s where the Commander just sits there, but given that their shields weren't about to collapse they may just have been deciding between low or high waking.

They were throttled at zero while AFK. That means instant submission and not moving once interdicted.

They must have come back after interdicted, and displayed lightning fast reactions on alt+f4.

This is the reason players should not be trusted when it comes to clogging.

You are clearly wrong, if you look at the screen and radar you can even see the wake icon.
