Good question. Depends on what you get out of it. My wife thinks there isn't any point in playing Elite. Though she doesn't think there is any point in playing anything and she never progressed from Chuckie Egg on the BBC micro.
You can always take a break from Elite, you don't HAVE to play it. If you are bored, go play something else. After a 3 month break from Elite, I am starting to warm to the idea of playing again with the pending release of 2.3.

Is there any point? I heard 2.3 makes some changes such as altering npc faces, ship mechanics, etc. Problem is there seems to be no eta which surprises me.
It`s always annoying getting invested then everything suddenly changes when you least expect. So is it worth doing something else with my free time? I`m considering flying IL2 or even having a run on Spacehulk Deathwing which isn`t bad.
2.3 won't magically erase your progress or anything. There's new stuff to do and things like that but nothing groundbreaking that'll mean having more credits/rank/rep/materials will be wasted. Then there's the fun you have playing, assuming you do something fun and don't grind.
Take a small fast cheap ship and challenge yourself to fly low level as long as possible through canyons/plains etc. Maybe do that with a friend or two, I did in Eagles and it was rather fun for an hour or two.
Either way yeah, theres no drop date because the devs don't know when it'll be ready. How long will it take to squash the X bugs they don't fully understand yet? How long will it be till they feel they have decent feedback on the changes 2.3 makes?
Very open questions so usually they don't announce an end date as any number of things can change between now and then. It's a true beta, not just a pre-screening as many other games use beta for.
