Horizons Is it worth upgradeing to Horizons

Hi everybody,

I currently have ED and have been wondering if it is worth the £20 to upgrade to Horizons.

I am currently ranked Dangerious, Tycoon and Pioneer, I have various well equiped ships and can usually hold my own in combat etc

Just what extra features would I get for my money?

personal choice, but you are only playing half of the game. Planetary landings, and the ability to farm ores to engineer (some say grind) your ships, to be better than they are. As I said though, personal choice

I have to say that Horizons is a really important part of the game for me and I am not into combat so don't go in for maximizing engineering. There is supposed to be a "Steam Sale" starting on 21 June, Horizons will probably be available at a knock-down price then (even in the Frontier Store) so if you want to wait (and you seem to be enjoying the base game in the interim anyway) then you will probably get a bargain.

So planetary landings (including Thargoid and Guardians content), engineers and Horizons-only ships (Dolphin & Beluga) - well worth the £20, a bargain if reduced in a sale.

You would be able to take part in the Buckyball base jumping festival which starts on Saturday and that's worth £20 all by itself! ;)

Shameless race plug aside - having Horizons is awesome. Just landing and driving is a really cool experience ..

.. there are amazing planetary bases to land at where you can trade and pick up missions just like the orbital stations (and also race - sorry, a lot of my videos are race videos) ..

.. you can do things like base assaults ..

.. or missions to destroy skimmers, scan surface beacons and retrieve stuff for search and rescue. Plus, as mentioned, you can land at the engineers bases (which are amazing locations in their own right) and get them to make improvements to many aspects of your ships (including jump range, speed, shield and wespon strength, etc, etc).

Or you can just go and do fun stuff with your buddies (or total strangers as in this case).

P.S. apologies for all the videos but a picture is worth a thousands words, especially in this case. I guess if you feel a bit "meh" about it after watching then Horizons might not be for you but keep in mind that you get the entire Beyond series for free as well.

Planetary landings are cool and fun, but the engineers are far and away the worst "feature" in any game i have ever played and i have been gaming on pc's since the atari 800xl.
The engineers take you out of the game and destroy most of the immersion and fun that the game might otherwise have, imo, but if you are the obsessive type you may actually be engaged by the grind. Notice i said engaged not enjoy.
Personally, if i were you right now and hadnt already bought horizons, i would wait to see what the rest of the 3.x updates bring.

My viewpoint is different to this. The recent updates to Engineering introduced in 3.0 have improved the system greatly. Some of the unlocks involved in accessing Engineers do leave something to be desired, some may force you into gameplay that you would normally avoid or may not yet have tried, but on the whole I have found Engineers to be engaging content and have enjoyed it immensley.

Edit:

In my opinion at £20 it is value for money, bought for less than this in one of the regular promotional sales that frontier, steam or humblebundle (see link above) have it's definitely well worth a buy.

I had second thoughts about my original answer.
I once thought ED was the best, most fun game i had ever played, it was like someone had somehow managed to build the perfect game, i was enthralled with it.
My next thought was "Heck if the original game is this good Horizons must be twice as good".
So after maybe two months or so i bought Horizons and installed it, realized what the engineers and FD's greed had done to the game and started to hate it.
My advice is if you are still having fun playing the base game, stick with that. My experience is that Horizons has little to offer but grind and disillusionment and i dont expect 3.0 to improve much since FD seems incapable of backing down from the Engineers.

Think I will give it a miss. The only extra feature I can see worth having is engineering the FSD so a round trip to the galactic centre will take only 1000 jumps not 5000 like I done 2 years ago (took me nearly 3 months)

Yes it is whole heartedly worth upgrading to Horizons. Maybe wait for a sale to feel you have had a bargain to boot.
...you are currently only playing half the game! Some of the planets you can land on and roam freely around in your SRV are just awesome.

Flimley

Sorry to be a complete luddite, but is that £11.99 a month, or is that a one-off and then you have it? The words 'season pass' make it sound like a subscription..? Thank you in advance!

It has inherited "seasons pass" from the days when Elite was going to be released in stages in regular seasons. Just read it as "Horizons"... two years' worth of updates by the time 2018 concludes" would be more accurate.

Once you have the game, you have it for good.

IMHO - Yes. It makes your experience complete, I can't imagine playing the game without Horizons. For 20 quid it's a bargain!

As for the features, have a look here: https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/seasons/#season2
Or here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous:_Horizons

Just a one-off payment - there is no subscription model for Elite Dangerous.

Thank you, both of you. I'm one week into Elite Dangerous on the Xbox and am liking the sound of Horizons.

Reread my original question, by the way, I sound like some 110 year-old village vicar. I'm 'only' 44, but with four kids always hogging my gaming time I'm generally a few years late to any game. May 2018 was when Ellite Dangerous was launched, in my house. Don't know how I have coped with the 44 years to this point, to be honest with you.

Thanks for the responses (and, @lightspeed, for the link to that thread), much appreciated.
