Is Latency an issue for players a long way from the UK I.E Australia?

Hi Guys....I am "THIS CLOSE" to buying the Premium Beta, the only thing that is holding me back (Besides being mildly annoyed that my "Commander Name" pledge does not come of the 180 AUD the beta will cost me) is if people in Australia or anywhere that is a long way from the UK are having any issues playing the the multiplayer?

Really keen to here for anybody from the the far lung reaches of the world any probs? :S

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

We have a few forum members from Australia etc who should be able to give you an idea on latency etc.

Have fun. :D

I can't speak for ED, but a friend of mine who plays WoW on the EU servers and lives in Sydney gets around 300ms latency on average.

I believe WoW servers are in Paris/Germany. Where live ED ones would be, I don't think we know but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

It shouldn't be once the p2p code is fully ready. The central server is there to keep track of the persistent universe, and as an arbiter to detect cheaters. You will mostly be instanced with people who have low ping with you.

This, so as long as you have enough Auzzies on at the same time it should not be too bad.

Not sure how lag will effect docking mind, especially in a BIG ship

I'm in Melbourne on adsl2+
Lag is rare and I'd say (for me at least), 95% of the time there is no issue at all.

Go for it, you won't regret it !

Thats just one of the unavoidable downsides of online.

playing against a guy from the otherside of the world is going to be a lot more laggy than playing your own neighbour.

But because of the nature of the game, it doesnt need to be all that fast. Its not as fast or unpredictable as a fps, so it should be much easier for lag compensation to predict whats going on.

Alot of people rave over dedicated servers, but generally P2P seems to provide the best experience for me anyway.

I'm yet to see dedicated servers done well.

The actual session is running on your client, or a low ping client near you. Stations are the same as meeting people in deep space.

WoW servers are all in one place, California.

Our ping is certainly much greater than that of players in the UK - I typically get something in the region of 160-200ms. However I have not seen anything in alpha gameplay that I can attribute to latency issues. There are problems, sure, but I seem to have the same sort of issues that are experienced by players everywhere. That said, it is entirely possible that when the game goes live we antipodeans will be instanced together more frequently than not, but that's just speculation.

No, they are most certainly NOT.

edit: because I know uninformed muppets always like their proof; The WoW server I am on is in the EU Cyclone Battlegroup. The IP address is 195.12.232.102 (you can see that here).

A trace route from me to there yields:

11 * * * Request timed out.

Steps time out after step 11 because those servers are configured to not respond to pings.
Steps 1 and 2 are omitted because my local IP isn't relevant.
