Is mining really so slow?

I took a mission about mining, and was shocked to see, that one fragment gives about 1%. And as one fragment takes about 5 min to mine and catch, it would really take 500 minutes to get one ton?! I must have gotten something wrong...

Think I would equip better mining gear before throwing in the towel.

1) Take a Collector Limpet Controller with you. Fire limpets without a target. They will collect things slowly until they die.

2) Take a Prospector Limpet Controller with you. The higher the grade, the more ore you can get from each asteroid.

3) Ignore asteroids that have particularly low mineral counts. It may take some time for you to get a sense for this.

4) Unless you're mining bromelite for the Engineer in Alioth, never ice mine.

Need a dedicated mining ship with at least 3-4 collector limpets and at least one prospector (you get more stuff with a prospector limpet. More stuff is good).

That is nonsense. 1A prospector limpet controller is all you need. Grades have nothing to do with ore quantity. Higher the grade, more controllers can be active at the same time, they also have greater range.

That's exactly what he is saying. Higher class is more limpets. Higher grade prospectors (A) give more fragments than low grade (E).

2. Take a prospector limpet controller with you - the highest grade you can get.

4. Mining Ice for things other than Bromellite for Bill Turner is actually fine, but you have to be extremely selective about what you take. There are only half a dozen things worth mining out of the ice, the rest will barely cover the costs of the limpets. Low Temp Diamonds do happen, but are extremely rare. It takes close to 100 limpets per ton most of the time. Ice mining is definitely not for new miners, unless you're simply practicing and junk mining.
5. Mining Asteroid Belts is so-so. You will get better returns than you do mining ice, but it takes far longer, as each belt has only a small number of asteroids, and you'll end up flying around more than mining.

3. Ignore asteroids with low mineral counts.
But don't confuse this with the material content. That will say either "Low" or "Medium", unless you are in a rocky or metal-rich ring, where you might get "high". Materials have nothing to do with the ore fragments that display the %.

Yes, I was referring to the prospector's grade, not size. That said, I prefer to take at least a size 3 controller. The second limpet helps me keep track of where I've been or test other asteroids while flying towards a good one.

Also, the ice-mining comment was hyperbole, if the italicized, underlined and bold text wasn't enough. You'll find lower % for most things, LTD drop very infrequently, and missions are almost required for a good profit. Fine for a zen experience but as you say, not for beginning/most miners.

Good tip on avoiding asteroid belts for rings. I'll bet the OP was either in a belt or ice ring.

Take many collector limpets controllers with you. Never less than the amount capable of having at least 4 active collector limpets at the same time, and the more the merrier.
Take at least 2 medium mining lasers, and a ship with a distributor capable of handling them.
Go to pristine metallic rings.
Profit.

Thanks for all the replies, Ill have to look into it more. The game still feels quite overwhelming, Ill have to try to see how to get those limpets and all.

Since it hasn't been explicitly mentioned yet, the fist thing you wanna do is getting to a system with better reserves. If you cannot refine a ton with just a few fragments the system reserves are too low (depleted<low<common<major<pristine).

In general the reserves increase with distance to the center of inhabited space (with everything uninhabited being pristine), but you can use eddb.io to find the next higher reserve system (and whether it contains the ring type you need).

I did some serious mining the last days and the money that you get is not overwhelming but it's ok.
I am mining with an anaconda with 3 grade 5 collector limpits and grad 4 refinery and inly 192 t cargo space. Depending on what you find ( above 15% is the sweet spot for me and everything under gold i leave alone) its about 4 Mil Credits one run.
Take a buttload full of limpits (prospective limpets are included).
Look for a metal ring and best situated in a boom system and a station near by, then switch on your tablet for watching Star Trek and give it a go!

What ship were you using? You can't mine fast in a Sidewinder.

1) Get a decent mining setup with collector limpet and a good refinery.

2) Pick a system with a ring system close to a station.

3) Forget prospectors

4) Fill your hold of whatever drops randomly in minutes.

5) Sell your stuff

6) Repeat.
