Is My Clipper a Viable Multi Purpose Ship

So I'm jumping back into the game after a year+ hiatus. My first stint involved 80% trading. Seeing how trading has apparently been nerfed and the fact that I believe too much trade burnt me out I'm looking for a more all around experience this time. So advice please. I have my "Tradeaconda", but the apple of my eye was always my Imperial Clipper. I have one that is completely A spec'd. Will that get the job done? I'm looking to run missions, rank up in Fed and Empire, unlock and get mats for engineers, tackle CZ's etc. Will this cut it as an all around ship these days? I always remember the knock being the shields were weak. The only other ship I currently have is an A spec'd Cobra MKIII. Or should I go with a different ship/build altogether? I have about 60 mil in the bank and around 250 mil in assets. Any recommendations commanders?

In short, yes. The iClipper is a completely viable mission runner. But, I would like to suggest the Python. It is everything the iClipper is, plus it can land at Outposts. I find that most of the easy delivery missions ask me to bring stuff to an Outpost. Just a thought to give you choices.

You heard wrong.. Bottom line is this Clipper will do fine as a multi purpose, the Python is generally expected as the best all rounder. If you just want to make pure cash for the least amount of effort (without exploits) configure your Anaconda for mission hauling/smuggling.

While the Clipper should work as a mission runner you will find that there are quite a lot of missions which need a ship that is able to land on outposts.
Your Cobra could fill that role - but then again you will miss out on some missions that are to outposts and need 60+ tons of cargo capacity. The best mission runner is propably the Python but:
If you love the Clipper stick with it - you are still going to be able to make enough money and you'll do it flying your favourite ship.

The Clipper is a great multipurpose ship, especially post engineers as you can now upgrade it's shields and make it even faster and more maneuverable. It's true that you can't land on outposts, but that isn't a massive problem these days as you can always summon a small ship like a Courier or Cobra to do those missions or a type-6/Asp for the handful of missions that need more cargo space.

The only drawback to the Clipper is that it requires a large landing pad, so it cannot land at outposts. But as long as you take this limitation into consideration, she is a fantastic ship to fly. She's also fantastically fast and agile, and sounds so nice. And looks amazing. Basically, it's a great ship for basking ;)

Assuming you have Horizons (you DO have Horizons, right?), she's also a good ship for passenger missions due to a fairly decent jump range and the ability to run from any interdiction. And VIPs like basking, right? ;)

Obviously, there are better ships out there. The Python is probably the best ship in the game, IMO, simply because it can do so much and still land at outposts. But she's all function, no form. The Clipper is so much form :D

By the way, if you like speed ... my Clipper with grade 5 dirty drives can hit 590 m/s. Yes, really.

Well. The clipper is a multi role and can do moste things. Its weakness is low shields and the fat large landing pad it needs that may lock you out of some missions and perhaps convenient docks. I use my clipper for mining and missioning as i can run from most fights. I dont get on with the hard point placements but that may not bother you.

A python is in my opinion the best all round go any where do anything ship. So.. i recommend you get one. :)

The clipper is fine though if you love the clipper use it, its a great ship for what you want it for especially if you havent been to see any engeneers yet and need to do some errands.

Thank you for all the replies commanders. Yes I have Horizons. I've only been back for a couple of days. I still haven't quite figured the whole engineers thing out. I've just unlocked a couple. I definitely want to take advantage of that aspect fully though and I'm looking forward to it. If I was going to go with a different ship altogether the Python was indeed was the one I was leaning toward. As much as I love the looks of the Clipper I'm usually all about efficiency first. So the Python is something I'm going to have to seriously consider.

Ah thank you. I read a few blurbs that suggested the profits were toned down and from my early experience the last few days that seemed to be true. Any chance you could point me in the right direction for configuring my Anaconda for hauling/smuggling? And do I take missions for hauling/smuggling? That might be a good option for me. I'm not into cheats/exploits. Any advice is much appreciated.

The Clipper is a great explorer.

While the jump range is mediocre, if more than makes it up for it with its awesome SC maneuverability, beautiful interiors, unobstructed view through canopy, size 7 scoop, and enough internals to take SRV, and sensors and some cargo in case you want to take something with you.

Hey Shiloh, I'll send you a PM a bit later, along with some good areas for smuggling/hauling.

Depends to a degree on which roles you are trying to "multi". IMO some roles are not meant to be "multi"-ed. Combat is usually not a good "multi" role and while a Clipper can fight, sort of, I do not think of it as a dedicated "combat" ship, more like a big yacht with guns. Isn't the Clipper the one with the weapon mounts placed way out on the sponsons? Too far apart for effective fixed-weapon use, especially at close range. For my credits, the most flexible/capable small ship is a Python and the most flexible/capable medium-sized ship is the Anaconda, though the Annie really swings the bootay in hard turns. My Clipper is fitted to move passengers and cargo.

I recently brought a Clipper to try one out and see if it was better than my Python.

It wasn't. I made a thread about it last week. Caused quite a stir. Lol

I no longer have a Clipper. :D

I love my Cheerleader, it's a great large ship.
That's it's only real issue - it's a large ship.
No outposts, and planetary landing can be... interesting.
But for passengers and little bits of cargo, it's great.
Strangely it also makes a decent mining ship.

It's definitely a "purpose" ship, but not a multi-purpose ship.

I disagree. I have one of my Clippers fitted out for multipurpose (the other is lightweight for trade and exploration) and apart from landing at outposts and mining it can do every mission on the board from assassination to trading without changing a single module. Shields could be better but I'd much rather the Clipper's speed and agility over the Python's tankiness.

Clipper is viable but limited. For ranking and mission running you most likely want something that can land on medium pads. Python is an obvious choice if you can afford one but there are other (much cheaper) options:
Cobra Mk3 - good cheap all rounder
Cobra Mk4 - never tried it because of its low speed but it can be fitted to do pretty much anything - lots of module slots in a small package
Viper Mk4 - I don't have personal experience but it seems similar to Cobra Mk3 in outfitting
DBX - limited cargo space but awesome jump range and decent combat ship when engineered
AspX - great jump range, good outfitting options, limited combat ability
Keelback - never tried it but seems viable and allows experimenting with fighters

Note: Flying small pad ships can be an advantage when dealing with outposts. Medium pad ships do run into issues with unavailable landing pads even in Solo.

I turned my iClip into basically a giant Cobra for mission running combined with using the remaining hold for bonus trading. It's not fully A-specced but it's heavily engineered in the mid-tier ranges. It's meant to get away alive, and maybe eat something small and annoying for incidental bounty income along the route.

As long as your multiple purposes are trading at large pad stations, mining less efficiently than in a Python and looking cool then yes.

It's way cheaper than a Python though, something that's often forgotten.
