Is my GTX 1080 the issue?

Set. As well as a few other Nvidia settings tweaks I've found while searching. Might try going back to just that one, though.

Overall, I've made a signficant improvement in the performance. I also didn't realize that simply setting VR High doesn't actually set everything to high [haha] So previous to this thread I was running in between VR Low and Medium, and now I'm probably somewhere between Medium and closer to High, though I still can't seem to bump up SS and HMDQ above .75/1.25. Appreciate all the help and suggestions so far, I'll keep testing different things and see if I can squeeze out some more performance.

Victory is mine!

Only took a full system dump and reinstall to do it [haha] But at last, the buttery smoothness everyone talks about. Started doing some pretty invasive system optimization yesterday that ultimately crashed my system, requiring starting from scratch. But through careful driver installation, registry edits, Windows system optimization, device cleaners, etc., I'm finally able to enjoy VR the way it was intended. ASW is still kicking in once I'm inside a station, but otherwise it's 50%+ performance headroom pretty much everywhere with 1.0/1.5 SS/HMDQ and low 20ms latency. Even in empty space, those settings would drop me to single digit performance headroom and 30ms+ latency before, but worse than that was the extremely jarring "record skip" I was getting pretty often no matter what the graphics settings were. That's finally gone. Now to nail down some settings that work and stop fiddling with it so I can just fly and enjoy it.

Nice one. Glad you managed to sort it out. You’ll be able to get 90FPS with HMD 1.25 but 1.5 a fair bit clearer if you don’t mind ASW.

If you want to try it but can’t get 90 let me know and I’ll post my full graphic settings. Took me ages to get them as high as possible but keeping 90FPS. Think my GPU is running at about 90 to 97 % in most stations with only the odd dip below 90FPS :D

You Rifters are spoiled with ASW ;-) we Vivers didn't had anything near like it until recent motion smoothing release.

That said, stations are known fps choke points since their interior were upgraded. I was able to run VR on a 1070 / I5-3570k with a small amout of judder only. FPS did drop in some cases (which probably means 45fps lock in Oculus) but it was playable, just not butter smooth. But truth be told, it was only really noticeable if you looked for it, as in for example looking at the panel in your lap and moving the view.

Yeah please do post it. The 1080 is definitely struggling to keep up in stations with the port services screens open [haha] I like 1.5 but I think 1.25 is enough for me, especially now that I can run SS at 1.0.

For sure. However when I'm in a station I'm usually clicking through screens pretty quick, looking from the transactions screen, back to the services screen, over to inventory or weapon groupings, etc. So for me it was very jarring and very distracting. The main problem I was having before this was, with ASW on, port services was completely unusable because the slightest head movement resulted in massive smearing. I could turn ASW off and the smearing would go away, but then it was back to the stutter. Couldn't win.

Sorry set it as private instead of unlisted, should work now. Just shows how it runs and has a couple of screenshots of the settings at the end.

Just in case it doesn't work It’s VR ultra with some tweaks:

Texture: High
Shadow Quality: Medium
Bloom: High (some people hate this in VR so will same some power if off)
Blur: On (same as above but I like it)
Anit-aliasing: FXAA
Suoersampling: x1.0
Amient occlusion: Low
Environment Quality: High
FX Quality: Medium
Depth of field: Off
Material Quality: Medium
HMD Image Quality: X1.25
Galaxy map quality: Low
Terrain Quality: High
Terrain LOD blending: Ultra
Terrain work: (in the middle)
Terrain Material Quality: Ultra
Terrain Sampler Quality: Ultra
Jet Cone Quality: Ultra
Volumetric effects Quality: Ultra

Oh and you will probably need to turn off ASW or it might kick in sometimes (like when looking at menus).

I am using a GTX 1080, with a quad-core i5 Intel CPU and 16GB of RAM. Having no trouble running the game at highest graphics quality settings. The only slight stutter I get is transitional i.e.: transitioning through the mail-slot or transitioning from Supercruise to GLIDE mode.

See above, that's finally the point I'm at now with the setup :)

You might not think you are but there is no way you are getting 90FPS everywhere with the VR ultra default setting or anything higher on an i5 (unless perhaps a very recent version). You will be getting 45FPS with ASW active in stations at the least but if you aren't sensitive to it then you'd see things as you have said. Some people are more sensitive to latency (ASW makes me feel a bit sick) and or can see the graphical anomalies associated with ASW (which I won't explain because once seen they can't been unseen).

Anyway, consider yourself lucky you are enjoying VR with your settings. I'm only really replying your post for when someone finds this in the future because they are having problems like the OP and are puzzled why you have such great performance.... you aren't you just don't see it :)

What Gortron said, plus there is a ton of variables to be considered. RAM speed for example. HDD / SSD speed. Motherboard chipset performance. Software settings in SteamVR/Oculus Debug. Amount of free RAM in OS with currently installed software. Condition of operating system (if it is slow or not). Whether or not someone is aware of the reprojection techniques. Particular station layout. Background programs e.g. antivirus software...

Bottom line - if you're happy with it, don't strive for numbers :) And with the recent SteamVR update, even DCS is playable, though it's displaying artifacts similar to those ASW does.

I’d been having a lot of issues with VR in Elite recently. Not just the beta but live game too. I have an Nvidia GTX 1080ti ROG OC 11GB version and even with low settings I was getting 45 fps and serious stuttering.

However I recently read about Nvidia’s DSR technology. Read more here:

https://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/dsr

I then realised that this was switched on for me. I don’t know how but I guess one of the latest driver installs set it.

Both the 4x and 2x were checked so my GPU was rendering at 4x resolution and then down-scaling. Obviously in VR this was killing it!

Turning off DSR did the trick for me and now I get solid 90 fps.

To switch it off just go the Nvidia graphics settings -> Manage 3D Settings and uncheck all options under DSR Factors.

Hopefully this helps someone else too. I’d been scratching my head for ages why the VR performance was so bad when others had no problem.

Ummm... I think you need to actively choose DSR resolution in game or geforce experience for it to work: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/ans...w-to-enable-dynamic-super-resolution-in-games ?

I used it when I had 1080p plasma display, without DSR on the higher resolutions were unavailable to select in game, with it enabled they appeared.

Yes, sorry I should have said that for me DSR was active in the EDlauncher profile within the Nvidia Experience. I assume that forced it to be used when I ran the launcher. Like I say, it was definitely this setting that was killing my VR experience.
