Is NPC piracy dead now?

It used to be almost as good as mining. In fact, when I heard of it, it brought me back to the game. You had to blow out drives, use FA off to stop them, surgically disable their defenses, avoid players, scans, and deal with other NPC pirates and bounty hunters trying to interrupt the stealing process.

The recent patch notes suggested this would no longer be possible, and after checking around a few systems where LTD NPCs should exist, I can verify that LTD piracy is now slowed by about 20 to 40 times what it was. Of course, I'm praying I'll eat my words and someone will discover or explain to me something I haven't discovered yet.

My idea of fun is making money, and becoming more successful and proficient by applying skill, tactics, and planning to crank those numbers up. You know, the general idea of progression. The thing is, there's no room for that in mining and hauling. Just smash into a rock and let the beams go. It's very simple, has little to no room for personal growth, and makes huge money right off the bat. It's like entering a cheat code to skip the game.

Is there any reason Frontier can't commit to any reasonable structure here? Avoiding scans from Robigo smuggling was fun. Overpowered Corvette wing terrorist leader missions were fun. Figuring out how to rip through combat zones the fastest was fun. All these activities were either completely or mostly stripped one by one and replaced with hauling, mining, and spending hours and hours stacking ultra-easy combat missions while entering who's missions were taken on a spreadsheet. It's boring.

If you find a system that has nothing but LTD hotspots, for example, you should find NPCs carrying ltds more frequently. Npc piracy is certainly not dead, it just became not-randomized. And I also welcome the fact that now we should be finding tritium miners too, that we can abuse to fuel our behemoths. Legit mining that sht is definitely a no go for us outlaws...

This, according to the patch notes. Looking forward to seeing test results myself.

Some guy on reddit told me it's very lucrative still if you find the right system. This is what he told me:

"You go to one of the systems that still has NPC's carrying LTD's, the most popular one being Senones (until the patch, when it changes). Interdict a ship with a mining laser, disable drives, use your own ship to bump them to a stop (this is a skill you must learn), then hatch break them. The most I have seen from one NPC is a Type-9 with over 300 tons."

I think there is a pirate reddit where they share best spots. He claimed to have made 7 billion in a short time pirating NPC's.

Here's where we practice our Dark Arts:

Contrary to popular belief, PvE Piracy never went away. After the January update, the rules changed, and most players thought it was dead. As it turns out, we just needed to reverse-engineer the new rules. Which (eventually) we did. And we told everyone. And no one believed us. I made 14 Billion between the January update and the June update and never touched a mining laser, but apparently "NPC Piracy is Dead LOLZ."

We tested extensively during Beta 2, and had a model that predicted target systems in that environment very accurately. We were all ready to ship our carriers out to the target systems, and...

FDev patched the mining ship behaviour at the last minute, and our old model had to be completely scrapped. So it's Dead again, right? NOPE.

We know there are systems out there that still work, but are not yet sure why. So anyone who wants to help by doing Pirate Science (or wants advice on getting into the trade) feel free to join us over on Reddit.

in addition to that: I made about 55 Million with stealing LTD here at our Colonia Bubble. I found a T7 full with LTD and got my Asp´s cargo filled. It was great fun!
