Is Open mode now available without an Xbox Live account?

I have a third ED account to play with my daughter, on her XBox.
Not wanting ongoing costs or her meeting people online, I have never bought an XBox Live subscription, and as a result only Solo mode has been available in game.
That is until 2 days ago.
Now multiplayer options are available, for open and private groups.
I cannot see any change to my XBox account which she uses, to indicate that it now has XBox live active.
There was an update to the XBox recently - was this a change that occurred with it or is it an error?
Any thoughts?

I don't buy my daughter gold either. Its a waste of your money. What I do is make her xbox my home xbox. Than just sign into my account on my xbox. So she gets my live and my games. My account is never used on her xbox. It just sits there sharing content and live. Than just have her do solo or private. Also you can hide her account in privavy settings.

Thanks for the explanation re the free Gold weekend and the tips re account management on XBox.
I'll have to look into those account settings.
