Is open really full of unsocial griefers?

I've been bounty hunting around the anarchy systems near Lave lately and although once or twice I've been attacked I find most other CMDR's very friendly.

Usually what happens if I run into another bounty hunter is the initial scan of each other, like a ritual show of strength, then I send a message offering to create a wing and bounty hunt together and people always seem to accept.
I've been flying around NAV beacons in two's and three's of CMDRs I've just met and had some great fun with it. I teamed up with another Vulture the other day and is was quite satisfying to watch a 'deadly' Anaconda get taken out so quickly.
Maybe I could get more credits on my own but I couldn't have more fun and I've added a few friends over the last few days from this. It really has been a great experience.

So I'm wondering is there really that many out there, I know there is a few but it looks to me like their in the very small minority. Are the majority of CMDR's out there just good people looking to enjoy the game? Because from these forums you would get the impression it's a lot more aggressive universe.

What's other peoples experience?

Disclaimer: I am aware than flying a Vulture might skew my experience and make me less likely to be the victim of an unprovoked attack.

Those that exist hang mainly around the core worlds. get away from the core worlds and you will likely never see one.

I've encountered a couple, but not the free for all people seem to think there is. I've formed some good wings in RES and had some good chit chat with other pilots, and I got whacked a couple times in a combat zone, which is to be expected there.

Not suffered a single griefer since full release.
Not even suffered a cmdr interdiction. And I've been a fair few populated areas.

No, open is not full of griefers. Lave has a few pirates who lurk there but I play predominantly in open and most players rarely respond to chat.

Most open players are cool. Some ain't but they are a minority, and on occasion an organised minority.

^ that, CMDR's is as close to a fact as you will get to a definitive answer.

I've been playing since premium beta, in all that time I've been attacked by another player exactly once (apart from conflict zones of course, but that doesn't count).

I've not exactly been grinding creds, too busy having fun in space, so I've never flown anything above a cobra, so it's not that I look intimidating.

The one time I was attacked it was a textbook proper pirate situation, he demanded I drop him a can of cargo or else. We fought, I won. We ended up chatting afterwards, nice guy, now on my friend list, we still chat now and then.

In general, I think the vast majority of players are honest and reasonable people. I think the actual incidence of real badness is very low, it just gets a lot of column inches, like worthless celebrities or extremist politicians do. There's a lot of perfectly legitimate in-character lawbreaking and nastiness, but that's entirely fine, there are supposed to be pirates in Elite.

I may have a bit of an alternative mindset here, I play tabletop and live action roleplaying games, so especially in the big fantasy larp games I'm kinda used to the idea of a mass, open PvP-possible environment. If people are behaving in an out of character unacceptable manner you report them to the referees (in Elite that's FD) and let them deal with it. Rarely necessary though, most people are nice and just want everyone to have fun.

Opinions vary from "they're everywhere" to "there aren't any". YMMV.

We know you're very biased against multiplayer, but as a mod, could you just give honest answers once in a while instead of always pushing an agenda?

You know they aren't everywhere, there's no need for misleading comments. Stop being disingenuous.

Not suffered a single griefer since full release.
Not even suffered a cmdr interdiction. And I've been a fair few populated areas.

Same here.

I don't play in open but I would guess there are far less than would appear. When someone posts something about being 'griefed' (some people really need to learn that one player attacking them is not griefing) the thread tends to get alot of attention so stays pretty high up on the list. It would be nice to see more posts about positive experiences like this thread :)

They are. The smallest minority I have ever seen in an mmo, but the hysterical screams when someone gets blown up are thrown around the forums like confetti and made so much of by other people it's actually funny. Well, it would be funny if not for the fact that throwing the term "griefer" around when all that happened is they got blown up ONCE could put potential players off.

Been playing in open since Beta 2. All but one CMDR I've met has been pretty cool... But then I don't hang around in the main hubs. I think you move out to the sticks and you run into more people who are interested in trading/exploring/bounty hunting rather than looking for the most Player-target rich environment. The jerks are going to hang around in the places where they don't have to wait before someone they can shoot wanders into their sights. In open space there's no instant gratification.

There are a few of those and a few of the silly 'open fire on anything for no reason' people but not everyone is like that.

If you meet more than your fair share, I would recommend you join the Mobius group, a lot of nice people there and no sociopaths.
