Is pirating good profit?

I have done bounty hunting at RES (1mil per hours in average), some trading (probably about 1mil with my T6).

now i want to try other aspect of the game and wondering should I go try smuggling, pirating...etc

I don't really see much discussion on how good are pirating and smuggling in this game. anyone can give some insight? (and no, i have no intend to be murderous killer, i just want credit XD)

If you're looking to make money you're going to be looking to trade or farm res sites.
those are the only real ways to make money right now. At least in high volume and quickly.
you will not make any more money faster in any other profession currently.
not that you can't make money as a pirate sure you can make money doing it and many have made a lot at it but they would have made it faster grinding a trade route.
smuggling isn't really a thing yet with a couple exceptions in past community goals and some very select trade routes involving slaves or tobacco. Picking up canisters is great if you're in a sidewinder and just started.
pirating only involves going after players at the moment since npcs carry worthless cargo. And you're going to have every bounty hunter or opportunistic pirate trying to kill you. Not to mention a trader you have wronged might have a full warbird in the hanger and will come after you.
mining is looking to get a substantial buff and if it is as good as I hope it is it will be a great way to make money as both a bounty hunter and a "trader" at the same time in a high intensity RES site.

but if you've seen a few of my posts I'm all about buffing the traders, buffing the pirates and their interactions with traders, having npcs carry cargo worth stealing, buffing bounty hunting against players, and giving smuggling a complete rework.

but if you're going to look into the pirate life I'd do it now before the crime update goes through.

Thanks I may go grab a cobra and give it a try. Grinding trade route and RES camping can be quite boring. Was hoping to look for some good interaction with other players

Not particularly profitable at all, but a great way to instigate player interaction and excellent RP opportunity. The thrill of the chase is half the fun and satisfaction really.

Just make sure you don't make Hitler's error and not have for insurance. There are psychos that will try to kill you on sight.

I love those Hitler meme videos (the movie its from Downfall is excellent btw, being a true witness account of his personal secretary is fascinating) /ot

OT: No its more of a rich man's playstyle, dare I say one of the endgame options (as you really need one of the bigger more expensive ships that have a high threat rate, to really instill the fear and compliance of traders) Though, with the area collection drones incoming in 1.3 and the addition of painite and that other mineral it might actually turn out to be a somewhat profitable career. (heres hoping! :D )

it is good for fun, and can be somewhat profitable. but be prepared for logoffskis, runners who rather blow up then give a ton of biowaste.
give it a shot and see for yourself, maybe you'll like it and maybe not.

im worth about 40m if I cash in everything. I have 20-30m tied up in my only ship and rebut is well over a million a pop. Yet I pirate almost exclusively. The best it does is pay my bills. If I want to trade up my ship I'd have to do something else. It's more of a game style than a rich mans pass time.

Bahahahahaha.... profit... profit as a pirate... Bahahahhahahaa...

Yea no, no profit at all, if anything you're losing money. It's a rich man's sport.

I only used the term rich man, since it only covers basic costs from what I've read/heard, a few insurance screens can easily end your pirating for a bit.

In the good old days every successful interdiction made your eyes water and your wallet spontaneously combust........FD's version of a particularly robust credit sink. These days with repair costs being on the right side of a joke it's not so bad but yeah, make sure you have credits to spare before taking on innocent traders - they might be wolverines masquerading as cash-cows :D

In my opinion, you're better off scavenging WSS and RES sites and selling the salvaged stuff at outpost blackmarkets. It's how I made my way in the universe early on, and it got me into a Cobra quite quickly.

In the early ships, when trade profits are poor and bounty farming is limited to easy targets, piracy isn't even possible. Once you can afford a decent pirate ship, you could also afford a trader or a combat ship that could farm you considerably more money on trading and bounties.

Yes it is profitable. People say it isn't aren't doing it right -- or they are comparing it to trading or bounty hunting, which it pales in comparison to. It IS profitable... but it's a slow profit and it's a hard earned profit. Be smart and never fight "fighter ships". These are combat psychos and want nothing more to just blow you up. They are outfitted for combat and all they do is murder, period. They can easily wipe out any gains you've had in the past few days in the blink of an eye. Check sub targets of any ships in the system that might be a threat. If there is a hauler but also a clipper/vulture/insert spank tank ship here.... just leave. You might pull over the hauler, but that one haul won't be worth the death that will come if the fighter chooses to take you out.

1. Warp In.
2. Check All Player Ships In Area. If None, Move to Another System OR Wait If It's High Traffic.
3. If threat is detected. Slow down, exist supercruise fast as you can. Normal space, warp to any nearby system. By the time they slow down and enter your warp signature, you've already warped to another system. Don't EVER EVER EVER try to jump to another system with a threat nearby in supercruise. He could lock you down by the time your FSD charges fully. Always drop out of supercruise, then warp to new sector. I've learned the hard way.
4. Don't be greedy. Tell the victim you mean no harm, you only want some cargo. Give them 7 seconds to comply or you open fire. Be ready to open fire though. I offer a second chance before death (never go for kill... just shoot the drives. If they die before the drives go to 0, well, they should have handed over the cargo, right?)
5. Know your targets. Some say that pirating anything higher mass than yourself is not possible. These people don't know piracy. It's hard, but it's not impossible. You have have to be ready to retract weapons and charge FSD when they do. Timed right, you'll go into supercruise just as they do and can then pull them over. Enough times and you may get close enough to them to down shields and kill drives. Work them little by little until they're a dead stick, then launch limpits and shoot cargo hatch.
6. Embrace the Bounty OR Never kill targets and always be ready to pay off fines. Personally, piracy and having a bounty on your head goes hand in hand. The fines would eat into profits... Don't want that. Plus, there's a deep satisfaction with blowing up the patrol ships that try to stop you from scooping your haul.
7. Face the reality. Many people are carebears, even if they tell themselves they're not by playing in open. You'll have plenty that will simply unplug if they're about to lose. It happens. It sucks. Go ahead and wish you could smother them with a carebear stuffy. Curse loudly, and then move on.
8. Greed Kills. If you have a good haul, cash it in. Nothing worse than having 250k worth of stolen goods only to be killed because you said "one more".
9. YOU ARE NOT A FIGHTER. Your weapons are to subdue traders and haulers. You won't defeat a combat oriented vessel with shield cells and extra shielding while your rocking cargo scanning and extra cargo space. The kind of guy that traded his way to a 60million dollar vulture. You won't win. Don't even try.

First Go To Piracy Ship. Cobra, Then Asp. I'm actually using the Vulture right now with only 16 cargo spaces. It works, but any juicy targets only get me 16 cargo -- which sucks. I'm dumping it and going to an asp as soon as I get the funds to juice it up a bit.

Finally. It IS profitable. But it's not fast and it's not easy. But it IS fun.

It is fun, it is dangerous, it is hard to make living of it as you going to have hard time finding cmdr transports with cargo in open.

Pirating is the "end game". It's what one does after amassing enough credits to buy and outfit any ship you're interested in and have grown bored of CGs, CZs, and RES's.
When the only thing left to hunt is....man. Or in this case, other players.
