Is smuggling lucrative?

Until this point I have not really found an illegal trade route selling to the black market that is more lucrative than legal trade routes. Am I out of date or does this still hold true? If so, some examples would be useful as to where the profit lies.

Closet thing I do to smuggling is doing slave missions. Even though slaves are illegal in most systems, the payout is nice if you get stack several missions. It would be nice if they made it more lucrative.

huh? it works perfectly.
just practise it without illegal cargo.
if you do not get the scan detected message you made it!

Im totally capable of getting illegal cargo into stations without being scanned. My point was that there is no point to doing so. Illegal goods arent worth any more at a high security station surrounded by cops than they are at an unguarded outpost, and they aren't really worth very much there either. I had visions coming in of an exciting "Han Solo" type of gameplay, getting into and out of dangerous smugglers dens with illicit drugs and weapons, and then running them through the police and high security stations to make massive profits in black markets. You know, smuggling.

Instead there is almost no incentive to take your illicit goods to the higher security stations because they sell for just as much (little?) at unguarded outposts. Also there is nothing about Anarchy systems or pirate outposts that feels even remotely dangerous. Theyre just another station like every other station with a skull slapped on there.

It's about finding the right places to do it also... I made a killing with slaves a few weeks ago. taking them to a remote outpost looking for cheap house-cleaning.. :)
Outposts seldom if ever scan you and almost never have any security ships roaming.
