is space engine used in elite dangerous?

Nope, they are two separate things. Frontier made their own, which they call the Stellar Forge.

ok, seems like they could have used it though

Why though when they have their own in-house platform that they've been developing and using for 20 years or so?

We develop games across multiple platforms using our proprietary cross-platform technology, Cobra. We publish our own game franchises, and have achieved commercial and critical success with our BAFTA-nominated titles, Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster.

We have previously developed games for third-party publishers including Microsoft, Amazon, Konami and Atari, all powered by Cobra.

Cobra has enabled code and resources developed on PC to be compiled and run on multiple formats while offering the power and flexibility to take advantage of every platform’s capabilities.

Space Engine:
  • Still in beta.
  • Freeware. (Means, not "Free" or "Open Source". There you know what you get, freeware is much more dangerous legal ground. )

Awesome that somebody built that thing. That must've been hell of a lot of work. But no commercial project can reasonably build on it. The combination of freeware and still in beta has turned into a minefield for other software in the past. It can go fine and can blow up in your face. Not an acceptable risk.

This highlights a major part of what's special about ED. While not as comprehensive as Space Engine, ED's stellar forge is still effective with an astronomically modeled scope, combined with the interactive ship cruising and gameplay. Arguably, FE2 & FFE's galaxy model could be considered a predecessor to space engine also.

No. As much as I like Space Engine, it is unstable as a mofo.
And don't get me started on the UI.. Oh god.

Stellar Forge is perfectly capable.
The only thing lacking is dev time dedicated to adding new stellar objects and phenomena.
It needs new Stuff™
