Is STEAM and standaloe install now equal ?

A while back (few months ago) I decided to installed the game through steam (removing my standalone install) but was unable to get the 64 bit version. So I installed it outside of steam. Now Steam does not see the game installed even thought it is in the Steam directory. Is there a way to fix that without reinstalling it through steam?

Are the games now on par with each other? If I install through steam will I get the same as if I install stand alone?

Also will this be a problem with the next major release, next year?

Install the game through Steam. I'm away from my gaming PC but it should go into something like:

X:\Steam\steamapps\common where X is your drive you have Steam on. In there, find the Elite folder. Inside is EDLaunch.exe Right click on that, select "Send to" > "Desktop (Create shortcut)"

That puts a shortcut to your launcher on your desktop. Click that and you should get a blue color based launcher. Update through that launcher (if necessary) and you are away. The games are identical.

Steam now does install the 64-bit version of the base game. If you have Horizons you need to get a separate Steam key from the Frontier account management page and add it to your Steam account separately. It installs into Elite Dangerous Horizons in your steamapps directory. If you rename Elite Dangerous to Elite Dangerous Horizons before installing you may be able to save yourself part of the download.

The games (64bit Horizons) are exactly the same now (to my knowledge, having had both versions), however the launcher is different. It looks the same mostly, but the steam launcher only offers the "Play" button, while the Frontier Launcher offers the different versions of the game (Horizons, 1.5 32bit, 1.5 64bit). Since ED:Horizons and ED are two separate games in steam, the launchers only offer the respective versions.
It doesn't really bother me, since I only need Horizons anyways, so I use the steam version, however we will probably have to download the Frontier launcher again, once the next beta is released (All full updates should be released immediately on steam, as happened with 2.0.3, while the next major update 3.0 will probably be a separate game on steam again - if they haven't found a nicer solution to this whole thing until then).
