Newcomer / Intro Is subsurface mining still a thing?

Despite the mechanism, I still enjoy health returns from SSD mining. The thing that is bothering me is how convoluted it is and the issues it has.

The game consists of prospecting for the correct rock.
Line up correctly to get the shot in.
The drill mini-game.

This would be fine but there are issues.

Finding the rock and lining up, whilst sometimes hard (also sometimes easy) is not very problematic, in a 'working as intended' way.

The drill mini-game. I have had this work both for and against me. I regularly (at least once on any rock I'm working) either miss the blue bits or hit them bang on. Sometimes when I miss, it counts it as successful and other times I hit it bang on and it says failed. So, sure, I'm probably breaking even on that but then it does make the whole game pointless, dare I say, annoying. That it randomly rewards/robs you despite you either getting it right/wrong. I wish they'd fix that.

The other thing ticking me off, is how long it takes for the 'spot' on that rock to tell you it is now depleted (without going into the contacts panel). What I mean is, one SSD spot on a rock, if I'm lucky the rock isn't moving fast. I can fire shot after shot into it. At some point though I fire one and just as it arrives, the point disappears. The issue there is, one, I just wasted ammo and two, when it explodes it often wipes out some deposits already extracted.

Anyway, to answer your point. Yes, SSD will get you loads but you have to loads to get it.

On a personal note, I've always found SSD - and core, come to that - pretty non-lucrative when it comes to time you need to invest in finding the "right" rock. Laser mining, while on the boring side, is far more productive in terms of commodities gained. Just my opinion, mind.

Yes and No.

I have got a dedicated SSD miner, a Python that I use occasionally for Tritium mining, it is the fastest way to mine Tritium in a Tritium Hotspot, I can fill it on a good run in less than 45 min, 160t + 10t.

I carry and use SSDM's on almost all of my miners, but due to ammo capacity, manoeuvrability and types of materials in the rocks I do not mine that much that way, but they are still worth fitting, they earn their keep.

The same applies to the Seismic Charge Launcher on my slower miners, I carry and use them but do not specifically go hunting Cores, but while laser mining I scan with the Pulse Wave Analyser every few rocks and if anything tasty appears, whether it be SSD or Core I mine it.

Trigger Setup. - I keep to roughly the same setup on all my miners and the easiest way I have found is this.

First fire group
Trigger 1 - Lasers and Collectors - saves time having to reselect collectors every time one goes pop
Trigger 2 - Prospector

Second fire group
Trigger 1 - Pulse Wave Analyser
Trigger 2 - Prospector - If anything glows you need to see why.

Third fire group
Trigger 1 - SSDM
Trigger 2 - Abrasion Blaster

Fourth fire group
Trigger 1 - Seismic Charge Launcher
Trigger 2 - Abrasion Blaster

All of my dedicated miner's are also fitted with 4A refinery's, Apart from the occasional speed run for Tritium I never go for a single material, that's the advantage of using a carrier (mining support ship) you can collect and accumulate for a later sale, I also hate having to throw away the leftovers from them cores, I use different miners for Icy and Metallic mining.

I have not been metallic mining since my last empty out but carrier cargo is viewable via link in sig.

I picked up a carrier the day before you Cohen and after making a quick billion to fill 'er up with cheap Tritium and cover it's running costs for some time I decided I'd better kit out my spare Cutter and practise mining for Tritium, just in case I ever need to one day.

My experience very much echoes the posts from the much more experienced miners above and I was pleasantly surprised at just how fast I could accumulate Tritium with a combination of Laser and SSD. At least now I'll be fairly confident that I can keep the carrier going if I'm a long way from the bubble.

The problem with SSD mining with a large miner is ammo, even with my Python I have 2 SSDM's fitted because of ammo, with my T9's I have only got a 1D SSDM fitted and Tungsten needed for ammo synthesis is very hard to come by, very rare in rings and hard to find on surface.
