Sometimes when I try supercharging, I just get a warning the FSD is operating beyond safety limits, but it won't say FSD supercharged no matter how many times I go back into the cone or for how long I'm in it. Some other times I do get the supercharged message, but still can't jump as it's over 5ton fuel limit or some such. Other times it works just dandy. Any idea what's going wrong sometimes?

hmm, on my mining ship, no, no fuel scoop- if that's an issue, man this game is bad at providing basic feedback to players sometimes. But that wouldn't explain the second error I've mentioned where it supercharges but still won't engage, would it?
Nope, but I've not seen that, so you need another answerer
I'm sure now with hindsight you can see that having no fuel scoop might have been stopping you scooping fuel from a NS. But yeah, the game in general doesn't tell you stuff
Yes, it is poor at providing feedback.
That said, regardless of how popular Supercharging may be, it is not a "design mechanic" of the FSD in the Lore. The manufacturer would tell you, Use at your own risk.
I think you can get the operating beyond safety limits without having a scoop fitted. I am sure I have travelled in Sirius without a scoop and heard the message. (N.B. This is without entering a jet even, it is just triggered by proximity I assume - maybe a bug, certainly been around for a long time.)
