Is that canister worth it...

Just wanted to throw this out in particular for the new pilots ... picking up a canister should be considered risky.

If federal forces find you have done that, you are tagged with a bounty and if a number of federal forces scan you then your bounty increases each time and then they may attack you.

If pirates are in the area, they may not like you taking their loot. NPC and PC's alike.

But as of late I seem to see a new scenario. Greifers seem to be dropping canisters near a station waiting for you to pick one up and then they can scan and attack you.

I personally avoid canisters, but if you pick one up, be aware of the problems that may come with it.

Grab the loot, run to Anarchic system, dodge the other dodgy types waiting near the station for you, and sell the goods at half market value on the black market. Works for me!

Nice avatar, by the way. Did you like the movie version of Space Battleship Yamato?

:D S

There are other stations that will buy the good on the black market, Freeport is dangerous it seems even if you are clean.

And yes, thought the movie was excellent.

One thing that surprised me: I went to the new Orbis space station, and found myself scanned by the feds while latching onto the landing pad. Since then I've avoided any station with a hint of a law enforcement presence whenever I have had ... otherwise acquired goods to sell.

Are you sure it was the feds that scanned you?

I like freeport.... most of my time is spent in the Resource Extraction Area that is super conveniently located nearby. K-warrant Scanner and bounty hunting. Profit isnt as fast as killing Fed fighters but its nice to mixup the gameplay.

You can tell when someone is new to the area, because while chasing them they usually kill themselves.... "asteroids".

That'll be me then....

Gotta say I *love* the dark asteroid field there - it's really atmospheric, in an airless sort of way.

As for cannisters, still having a low capacity Sidewinder, the occasional lucky canister find in and around stations have been very welcome. Getting pretty good at scooping, but it's impossibe close to that blasted magnetic toast rack.

I agree with Rog that for a sidey pilot canisters are very welcome.

Yeah I had a go at picking some up that were orbiting around the entrance to the port. The magnetized toast rack was sucking me in if you get close, took me a while to realise what was happening. must have been hilarious to see a sidewinder spinning around trying to escape the magnets had to use the boost

Can you offer any advice on where floating cargo canisters are most likely to be found other that around a Station?

On the 4 occasions that I've tried to scoop them up, 3 have ended in crashes with the Station. I usually can get to within 2-300m of the canister before the Station rotates and I'm dragged into it.

I have found canisters at some of the Unidentified Signal Source locations. Other things too, but you will have to discover those on your own.

A small suggestion I can give is, if you're collecting canisters floating just around a station:

fly up right to the container and THEN open the cargo scoop.

Otherwise some sort of gravity well is going to give you a bad time.
Trust me.;)

I don't think this is griefing. It's more like baiting but it's up to you to bite. If you see a canister and a ship hanging about, make your choice whether to take the risk.

A griefer baiting is still a griefer. And agree with the choice being yours - just hoping to point out a risk factor I seem to have noticed. If the canister is at or inside the station, the only risk is probably in just trying to get it. If the canister is outside the no fire zone, think twice and then proceed with eyes wide open.

As usual, griefing is subjective and I'm not getting into it.
It's illegal to pick up cargo that doesn't belong to you. Being inside the firezone and doing it without permission/license should be immediately detected and dealt with by the station as you'd be in full view.
Station scooping would be indicative of stupidity or brazen balls. ;)
