Newcomer / Intro is the Adder a good upgrade from Sidey?

i can afford an adder, and it does (from a cursory glance of the stats before i logged off) seem like a good upgrade.

is it, or are there some pitfalls with the adder that dont appear in just the stats list alone?

There's no pitfalls save for the extra insurance cost. The modules available are more expensive but not terribly so.
It will be less maneuverable and not as fast as a sidewinder.

The adder comes with more cargo space and I think a jump range increase over stock sidewinder.

I've really enjoyed it especially after upgrading the frame shift drive(FSD).

In the end though it all depends on what you want to do.

I spent around 600,000 cr upgrading it to have a decent cargo hold, D class internals with a class A FSD

Although I've not flown an Adder myself, I've read there are people who are using it as a fighter/cargo ship and loving it.

I'm currently rolling in a 1.5 million Cred Cobra but thinking of getting an Adder to play around with (not selling my CObra in a hurry though).

Yes the Adder can be upgraded more than the sidey, but the sidey has the best views....in E D the're are so many variations on a ship just go with what you like :)

P.s. Always leave yourself with 10% of the rebuy cost for insurance :(

The adder is considered a starter exploration ship. So I believe it has a very decent jump range off stock equipment compared to the other low cost ships.

I'm in the Adder at the moment and it's good fun. It can fight reasonably well, has good range and can carry a decent bit of cargo.

Michael am I right in thinking the adder was designed specifically as a starter exploration ship? I'm positive I remember reading it somewhere recently but I can't remember where.

If so am I right in thinking it then has a larger stock jump range than other ships of equivalent price range?

(It's always worth asking the devs when you get the chance ;))

The pitfall that doesn't show up in a stats comparison is that the Sidewinder has a very good canopy view in the "Up" direction, which is important if you're combat-oriented, and especially if you use a head tracker like TrackIR or the Oculus Rift. The way combat is designed in this game, with roll prioritized over yaw, you're going to be "pulling" in the Up direction (with thrusters, if you know what you're doing) to get guns on target.

The Adder, by comparison, has a narrow slot of a canopy view and no "Up" view.

You can still use the sensor display in combat, but for those of us raised on air combat sims with (early) padlock views or (later) TrackIR, it's a very limited view for combat. Not that the Adder is a dedicated combat ship by any means, but since it has more self-defense than a Hauler, it might be something to think about.

Not specifically, it's the next generalist ship after the Sidewinder so can be adapted for most roles.

Shooot Michael I was trying to play down how well the Adder could fight...my first kill post 1.0 was in an Adder, mind you a well equiped Hauler with rockets as the main armement.....:D

P.s. The only thing I miss from the Hauler is the view... The Addder rocks :D

That !
I fought last night in a adder and you absolutly need to use the radar and compass to follow your targuet

As others have said, it all depends on what you want to do, and how you kit out your ship. In Elite II, I tended to grab an Adder as soon as I could afford it, as it was an okay multirole step up from the starter Eagle. In Elite: Dangerous, I had a Cobra before the Adder was implemented as a choice, so haven't tried it myself. I've been surprised by a bountied Adder throwing missiles and beam lasers at me when bounty hunting in my Eagle last weekend, so I'd say it has some decent combat upgrade potential (I did down him and collect, but let me tell you I changed pants when I docked).

Not to mention, as a Brit, I bet the seating arrangement makes you feel right at home ;)

As an American, I naturally prefer the seating arrangement in the Cobra, thank you very much :p

From Newsletter #53

The Adder is an entry-level exploration ship from Zorgon Petterson, to complement the Core Dynamics Eagle (combat) and the Hauler (trade). As well as a decent jump distance, the Adder also offers a good number of utility points to outfit with the various modules that you may need on your ventures out into the unknown!

So...? My brain is now heavily conflicted lol

I actually took down a Python in my Adder, so I definitely liked it - I've managed to work my way up to a Cobra now, which is where I intend to stay until I've made enough to afford an Asp AND lots of upgrades, but yeah... the Adder is a rock solid ship, I'd say it's the best of the entry level really just because of the expansion slots - and it sports the third hardpoint like the Eagle.

I thought rebuy is insurance....(new player) not unless you mean an additional 10% above rebuy
