Newcomer / Intro Is the ASP worth it?

I'm having trouble justifying the cost of the ASP for me.

I have 2 ships
- Cobra : fitted for combat
- Type 6 : fitted for safe trading (100T cargo)

Note: I refuse to trade without shields.
Goal: Make money of course, yet still enjoy the game.

The ASP really only provides about more 20T of cargo space than the Type 6 yet costs (I believe) much more in fuel and insurance. I already have a Cobra for combat and other non-trade activities. I like the Cobra. It gets the job done quite well. I'm thinking of equipping a Sidewinder for exploration... There just doesn't seem to be a purpose to spend ALL that money on an ASP.

Is it worth it? What does it give you for that cost?

The real "value" in the Asp is its ability to do just about everything well. It isn't 6 and a half times better than a type-6 at trading, but it can out carry a type-6, out explore an adder, and outgun anything below a clipper. Whether or not those capabilities are worth the price is something only you can decide, however it is a very good ship. That and that fact that it is the sole ship between the 1 million type-6 and the 17.5 million type-7 makes it a very popular upgrade for all professions. The insurance costs can definitely bite you (most "I lost everything" threads feature the Asp for a reason), but the fuel costs are hardly a problem if you're trading. That only becomes an issue once you get to the Python. Even clipper fuel costs are reasonable.

I still keep a stripped Asp in my garage, it's just too useful for me to let go of it.

Oh, and it's Asp as in the snake. Not A.S.P.

Well, I've kept an Asp fitted for Combat and a T6 for trading.
Even combat specced, I have 76T of cargo space in my Asp, I mostly use for running mission and commodities while doing the missions.

But lately I've been thinking about ditching the T6 entirely. Sure, it can haul a bit more than the Combat specced Asp, but that's all it can do.
With the Asp, I don't worry about interdictions. I just submit and kick the pirates wooden boots and claim the bounty for extra credits.
If enough interdictions happen on the route, it can turn out quite lucrative.

So I'd say ditch the T6 and just use the Asp until you can afford a T7 which can haul significantly more.

I'd say yes though you have to pay a decent amount for it. Compared to a Type 6 what it lacks in cargo space (and not by much) it more than makes it up with speed, agility and the ability to work also as a combat or exploration ship. In short the Asp is a better allrounder. Even if you're just trading the safety of the combat capability will make you feel better about doing some riskier trades than trying it with a Type 6.

What is this ASP you're talking about?

But yeah, IMHO the Asp is totally worth it as a trading, exploring and mission running vessel. :)

I really love my Asp ... atm i have mine on A-grade (except shields) and i might buy me a second Asp ... one will be outfitted for combat and exploring (around 30 millions) while the other one will suit for long distance rare trading runs (around 13 millions)

I love the view angle and the jump range =)

I ditched my t6 for an asp and love it. Slightly less cargo but interdictions are fun. It's incredibly manoeuvrable. Landing so much quicker. You also only need a 12m asp not 35m dispite what a lot say here.

I love my Asp, mine is loaded as a military gunboat.
However you need the cash, easily an additional 20 mil, to make it powerful. Mine cost 44 mil in total and it's a beast!

The Asp is worth it.
What I like about it is the fact that you can have a reasonably sized cargo hold (80t) and at the same time outfit it for bounty hunting.
I like ships that enable me to combine combat with trade.
In it's class it also is a ship with a very nice jump range.

I love my Asp, I jump between a3 sheilds for trading and a6 for hunting. this takes me from 120 tons cargo when trading to 60 or so when in combat trim, it is however the better part of 35 million credits

A everything accept for life support. in combat mode I can take out expert npc clippers and pythons with reasonable ease a little energy manipulation yes but no running needed it out handles a t6 but you cant compare them it is all things cobra in a bigger package. dont look at one untill you have at least 15 million though.

I've got about 15 million in assets that I'm sitting on (most of it isn't liquid; it's invested in two ships).

I'm almost ready to buy the Asp. The upgrade costs for the class 5 slots make my eyes water though.

Well... I have just bought the rated A thrusters for my Clipper... 16.1 Millions. LOL.

In general i fly ships for style and feeling they deliver. While being a massive hunk of metal, the ASP delivers in every aspect. One of the most versatile ships in the game... and the sound when flooring the pedals... hmmmm... You might loose some credits due to the asp not being the perfect but only a good ship in most aspects (perfect only in exploring), but hell yes... get one.

About 35 million credits worth, yes.

That's what my Asp was worth before I moved on to a Clipper.

It is a fine ship, versatile, agile, punching hard and taking a pounding without much of a complaint. I didn't even have shield cells equipped at the end, because no pirate ever got my shields down before I got down his.

You don't need 15 million for your first asp.
I agree with this. I have no trouble buying new ships and kitting them out with D-modules and the Asp was no exception... I was flying it with just under 9 million spent on it and even then it was a fantastic upgrade from the Cobra and it's nice to know that it will only get better from there.

Nice to hear someone agree with me. I think it's the vets that day it's not possible most because it feels nothing like their 35m asp but forget what the cobra or t6 was like.
