Is the Asp worth it?

I've got a kitted out Cobra and no ship except elite Anacondas give me trouble - tough but doable. But now I"m getting the itch to switch ships and keep hearing about the Asp as the next upgrade to the Cobra in the multi-role ship department.

The only problem is I've never, ever met an Asp I couldn't stay underneath to kill. They're considered easy pickings cos even in my Cobra I can stay out of their firing arc regardless of AI skill.
Now that may be different when it comes to real players but I highly doubt it as the player is still limited by the mechanics of the ship.
Which leads me to think that as a combat vessel the Asp just doesn't cut it against smaller, more manoeuvrable craft, which is Cobra and below. A good player will (IMO) keep out of the firing arc of the Asp quite easily.

At over 6 mil cr I'm wanting to hear from Asp owners as to how effective they are. I know they can carry cargo but can it compete with a kitted out Cobra in combat?

Hell yes. The Asp has a devastating hardpoint location array, focusing fire even for a fixed loadout is straightforward. A top of the range power distributor and a sufficient power plant can give you significantly more bang for your buck with energy-hungry weapons compared to the Cobra. It is a joy to fly, visibility is excellent. I've used mine extensively for bounty hunting and the occasional assassination and had no problems.

I love my Asp.
I took one as a step up for a T6 expecting something with combat ability AND cargo space while I was saving for Cobra upgrades. I've never gone back to the Cobra.

Its capacity and armaments make it more than a match for a Cobra, in my view.
I've equipped mine with class 6 shields and a 3A shield cell - using medium fixed beam lasers and quad gimballed multi cannons it can quite happily go toe-to-toe with the Elite Anacondas of the bulletin board kill missions.

I haven't really done any significant PVP in it, perhaps a skilled Cobra, Viper or Eagle pilot could out-manoeuvre it but it takes a LOT of punishment and has significant firepower due to the extra slots, so I think it would need a very skilled opponent to beat it.

I'm still a brokearse freagle pilot but I will be buying what I think looks great not what's recommended. So the asp is only worth it if it appeals to you!

ASP is a great trader and deadly gunship, when equipped right.
But from the "explorer" point of view, how does 40LYs jump range sound to you. ;)

Once you have the funds to upgrade from a Cobra to a ASP you will be glad you did.
However get ready to spend some credits.

Asp's flat awesome, but in many ways so is Cobra. Don't ditch the Cobra tho, save enough to have both before actually choosing.

Once you've done ASP there is no going back.

Love this ship but it does Cost to maintain and upgrade.

So If you coming form an upgrade T6 Keep it and make sure you have enough credits for some of the upgrades

6.6 million credits for the basic hull. You'll want a couple more million at least for upgrades, depending what you want to do. Top of the line components can cost as much as the ship itself.

Curious how you got it to 40ly. Currently fitting for exploration and can squeeze 33 out of it.

I reckon i could get more, but doesn't that mean configuring a paper Asp with crappy E modules ?

As for OP, i find it very capable in combat, the load out variation is very good.

FWIW mine is currently worth about 15 million and it's still not as upgraded as I'd like.

The Asp is a great all rounder. Plenty of cargo space, huge jump range, big fuel tank and insane firepower. I've mounted 6 multicannons on mine and it wrecks everything in its path! Pythons go down in no time at all and small ships pop like squashed bugs. :)

It's not terribly manoeuvrable though. Maybe it would be if I could find (and afford) some A rated thrusters to replace the I have now but I'm sceptical. Fit the best shield you can is my advice. If you can tank the hits long enough to bring your weapons to bear there's very little that can withstand them.

I don't have an asp yet but I am planning to wait until i get around 8 million so i can upgrade the hell out of it. I don't think default is better than my 2 million viper.

Also I never liked the cobra, its hardpoints are meh and while it has big cargo, its fsd upgrades aren't that great.
Asp is one of the best ships in the game.

Yes its a excellent ship.
Base ASP is 6.6mm upgraded for long trade and heavilly armed its 20mm
Think about weight too. Avoid B class equipment because its heavier. Jump from C to A... Review the power plant to check if lower type 4A is as good and lighter than 5B... That differences make the 40ly from the 30something ly (with empty cargo hold.... Full hold its 24ly)

Cheers I will top 3.000.000cr to night so a ways to go..lol

Maxed FSD module alone cost 5M+ (just like whole maxed out Type-6 w/o weapons)

I had Asp and downgraded it back to Type-6 immediately when I've discovered I need like 10 more millions to upgrade it. Now I'm going for Type-7 because it is better as trader. And for combat (i.e. entertainment) Cobra is fine and cost 10+ times less (don't need maxed FSD for a combat ship).

the ASP is the best ship of the ED, seconded by the Cobra

they are so good that i don't even know why other ships exists

I've flown just about every ship currently available in game, and while the Anaconda is still my hands down favourite (for the size more than anything) the Asp is easily second best.

Of the big ships it's got arguably the best mix of cargo space, manoeuvrability, firepower, and range. That really makes it the best all-round jack of all trades ship in the game.

So is it worth it? Definitely.

Beware with type7! It only can dock in stations and profits from there are generally less than between stations and outposts. Before make the change find your future trade route... Because it have a lousy jump range.
