Is the Clipper a good combat ship?

I think it's probably the sexiest ship in the game. However, whenever I see it in combat zones it seems to die pretty quick. Is this just the AI being bad, or is the ship itself weak for its massive cost?
I haven't found one at a shipyard yet so I don't know the exact specs. If it's a terrible ship, then I guess I'll just settle for an ASP or a Python.

you can't just buy one,you need rep with teh empire.
Yes it is a good combat ship, might not be as good as a python, but its half its price.

All big ships go down quick at combat zones, not just the clipper.

The hardpoints are spread really far apart, so it can't really take advantage of the more-dangerous fixed mount weapons. It's not the most maneuverable thing, either.

im far from an expert on the clipper, but to me it seems it has close to the forward firepower of the asp, but also mounts for turreted weapons to give it a wider fire arch.

completely disagree.
Its crazy maneuverable, its basically a big viper.

The only reason I'm trying to get rep with the empire is to be able to buy one again.

its much quicker than the asp, only the viper is faster.

Got a fully upgraded Python, still iam going to scrap it down for the Clipper when I'll be able to buy it. It somewhat lacks in Firepower, having 1 less Large mount + Class 6 instead of 7 Power Distributor, but it makes up with its great Speed.

Going to use my Python for Trading and the Clipper for fighting. Keep in mind Clipper can only land on big Stations, outposts not possible since it needs large bays.

jump range on the clipper might be worse than the python

The position of the hardpoints is a big problem, or can be depending on how you play. If you play with fixed weapons it'll not be a goodship for long distance shooting due to poor convergence of weapons, unlike the asp which has the most amazing convergence. If you fly gimbal and turrets then it'll be just fine :) and it is fast.

And lets not forget the cockpit and the View. The Orca and the Clipper have 2 of the best looking cockpits in the game. I would buy a clipper just for this alone as I am an explorer and i could not get tired of looking at the cockpit. It also has one of the best views as well as the top portion of the cockpit glass is un obstructed the same way the sidewinder is.
