Is the Cobra MK3 a weak ship?

Feeling a little underpowered doing combat missions in this ship.
Its quite sluggish!
Anything above expert level gives me the troubles.

There is no engineering at all on this ship. But it is A rated.
Does it make a huge difference?

Never been interested in engineering, but maybe its time to change that?

Cobra is a good ship for silent running build.
Do to his speed and handling.
No shields but hull reinforced modules.
4 multi-canons. And heat sink.

And engeneers could make it one off the best ships in the game. After PYTHON :)

I find it more a good small operations smuggler tbh. Silent running fit with cargo and heat sinks no shields like stated above, multi cannons optional replace haul mods with cargo racks. For combat though, i would go d rated for sensors life support maybe downgrade the fsd to lessen the mass should allow you to out turn or somewhat stay out of expert firing arcs.

Engineering makes a huge difference. Dirty Drives 3 from Farseer is your first step. And more punch to your weapons. Multicannon with corrosive is highly recommended as a one weapon. Then with bi-weave shields engage/disengage according situation. And work your way with more engineers as the situation arises.

I have all ships but I still fly a lot with Cobra Mk III; also combat missions because its so much fun to dogfight with it.

Shamelessly stolen from someone on one of the Volyboom threads but....

You can also fit a Cobra with mine launchers and pretend you're a B-2 bomber bombing surface installations.

It's a cargo ship
It's a stealthy ship
It's a fast ship
With a few engineering modifications you can do yourself it can make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs

If Han Solo were in the Elite Galaxy, it would be the type of ship he would fly

Haha oddly enough the cobra i have i had since starting still named falkon mk II

As far as Small pad ships go, the CMkIII is not a weak ship. But, compared to Medium and Large pad ships, you can find yourself in trouble. One of the advantages of the CMkIII is it's speed. If you find yourself facing an opponent you can't out maneuver, you should have a plan to run away.

It can overwhelm any small or trading ship and most mediums. It can easily run away from anything stronger than it.

And for that, it makes an excellent pirate ship :)

The cobra mkiii is an iconic ship in game lore and alot of cmdrs have deep feelings for it because of its status in previous games.
In elite dangerous, however, it's just another small ship.
It's fast, good jump range and has decent cargo (for a small ship) but for combat it's not great.
Engineering makes most components 40% better on average. So it does make a difference.

For its size it's not a great combat ship - the Viper III is generally better if that's all you want to do - but it's decent. Its advantage is that you can set it up to do some fighting and still have internal space for trading or missions. It has 6 optional internals of good sizes, too.

Engineering can make any ship virtually unbeatable by NPCs, of course.

It's a very good small multirole ship. It's agile, super fast, it's roomy, it can do anything really. But ultimately it remains a 300k rebuy ship and the hardpoint placement isn't the best so it has limits. If you want to start punching above your weight you could engineer it of course, Engineers are certainly broken enough to turn a Cobra into an NPC murder machine.

I using a cobra MKIII right now, just for laughs and testing out the new C&P system. It's actually a lot of fun to fly, especially when you're murdering NPC passenger ships for giggles.

I'm engineering mine to run as an even better trade ship, that uses speed as its defense.

It is certainly a very safe ship, provided you the brave sir robin maneuver.

Thanks for the tips folks. I am going to stick with it and engineer it.
Never done any serious engineering before so that will be something new.

It will be interesting to see the gradually difference in performance when engineering is underway.

The main issues that it is somewhat "clumsy" and not so agile now and also quite fragile may change once engineered :)

Took a expert pirate kill mission(in a FDL) the other day and my setup is shieldless with two railguns and mc cannons on the small hard points.

Managed to beat the pirate with not so much trouble. Although he was only competent.

Anything above expert is almost a no-go in a Cobra that is not engineered. Of course smaller ships can be beaten still.

Ooooh, this is convenient....

I managed to kill a Deadly Anaconda with my Cobra last night and I was looking for an excuse to brag about it. :p

I saw a "Weapons fire detected. Threat 2" USS and, as part of the never-ending quest for mat's, I thought I'd take a look.
Dropped in and there was a cop ship fighting with a Cobra.
Started attacking the Cobra when the Annie arrived.

"Threat 2"?
Started shooting at the Annie's shields in a "Last Gesture Of Defiance", fully expecting it to use an SCB and then I'd be stuffed, but it's shields went down and I thought "Hang on! I'm in with a chance here!" and then, a minute or so later, I turned it into a pretty explosion. :D

So, no.
I wouldn't say the Cobra is a weak ship at all.
