Is the game's instancing really THIS bad?

It was so bad last night, that me and my wingmen couldn't even really play the game. Here's the story, Ill try to keep it as short as I can.

Me and my two wing men take a break from trading. Our goal was to head off to the diamondback community goal and guard traders from pirates. I hear it's kicking. So we jump into our combat cars, and head over. We go to the system, and EVERY nearby system.. and after an hour, we only find a SINGLE T6 going back and forth. HHmmm... well, maybe this one isn't kickin, so we head over to the one at 78 majoas...

We get there.. and once again, not a SINGLE commander in any system to be found. Not at 78, not in or around any of the systems related to the CG. Well, the three of us are sitting at a nearby system and I decide to warp over to the CG system one last time before we call it a night (we were going back and forth between the nearby systems). I jump in.. and WAM!! THere are at least 10 commanders in supercruize... action EVERYwhere!! I yell at my guys in comms to hop over... they get into the system, and what do they see? You guessed it... just themselves. They jump out...jump back... nada. Empty system. They fall into normal space and back to super cruize... nope, nada, empty system. Then I myself fall into normal space and back into SC and vuala... I too am back into an empty system. We couldn't find another commander the rest of the night.

So there WAS stuff going on.. but we had absolutely no way of participating.

It's tough when you actually say to yourself... well... playing this game right now feels like a waste of time. I love trading.. and the other things that go on, but the 3 of us really like interacting with other CMDRs at every opportunity. We desperately tried to do SOMETHING related to PVP for almost 3 hours last night, and there was nothing to be found, spanning dozens of systems that had RIDICULOUS traffic reports, spanning 200LYs....this really seems broken.

Anybody else having major issues like this?

Last night, and indeed much of the weekend, many people had issues connecting. Someone else did a quick and said that there was a number of internet outages throughout Europe. Seems okay today.

Pretty sure there's an instancing bug relating to Wings that they have said they're aware of and will be fixing in the next big patch.

Thanks YYY... I wonder if this was the cause. We were having serious issues last night, between 7:30 and 11:30 PST... I'm not sure when the fix was implemented. After this?

Well the post I quoted was at 4:31pm (BST mind you) today. Yes I experienced a lot of logouts and inability to log back in between 17:00 and 22:00 (BST) Sunday night.

It will really depend on where the players in your wings are.
If you are all in the same city and have similar connection nothing should really be different from what you see when not in a wing by yourself.
If the players in your wing are in different countries or regions of the world this will be a nightmare to get you decent connections to the other players not in your wing.

Saturday night I was in wing with my son (same country but different connection) and our new freind who is really far far away at different side of the globe.

We had problem finding other cmdr's but not much, even in Eravate somehow no players in system , which is not possible. But we never lost each other, and was always able to follow each other , only once we all got disconnected at once from game.

Same last night. The three of us NEVER had an issue being together in a wing... we just coudn't find anybody ELSE... ANYWHERE (even lave and surrounding areas were desolate. I think I found ONE CMDR there) The only time we (and by "we", I mean "I") really saw anybody, was when I jumped to that system first by myself. When my mates jumped in behind me, they only saw themselves... Not I, nor the other 8 or 10 CMDRs there were visible.

If you are friends and in a wing you will be instanced together, no matter your networking issues. Sounds like you have a better connection than the other two so you were seeing other players; but when your friends joined you, you are lumped with them and go back to their instance without the wider body of players.

But why doens't it put all THREE of us in that instance? Isn't there a limit of ~30ish? I counted 8 to 10 in SC... and while a lot, certainly nowhere NEAR the limit. I would hope that as long as there aren't 30+ players in one place, everybody would always be in the same instance. Does the game do some kind of check that says... "Player F's connection to player C is too slow, they go in separate instance". "Player D's connection to player C is fast, I will put him there". ???

Which would be terrible for a player with a less than stellar connection... he may end up in his OWN instance all the time.

It's the lowest common denominator.

I play on my own in Open and hardly see anyone, even in popular systems, because of my crappy ISP.
I'm waiting for the fast local provider to wire up my street - could be a while.

Really wish it wasn't designed this way, but anyways it is how it is now.

I spent much of my time in open before my exploration run and hardly saw another play anywhere. Maybe straight unlucky, but I have a top connection. Only problem I have is that I am on the other side of the world to the server I guess. Gather my ping registers too high and it forces me into a local instance for those with same pings as me? I am in Australia. Is there any way to confirm your ping in game? Anyways... its reminding me of Codies Grid 2 & Grid Autosport with its regional restrictions in online play. Basically it was impossible to find players locally, but OS players were blocked from connecting to us (without changing your region in Steam that was)

I've kinda given up looking for a busy/active system with CMDRs now. Doesn't both me too much as I see Elite as a single player experience anyways, but would be nice to experience an epic larger battle one day.

Even systems that should be busy with billions in population feel desolate and practically the same to a system with 100k and a single outpost. :(

I play from Australia too and I never have any trouble seeing other players. I have winged with a fair few different players and it is surprising when they say they come from the USA or Europe.

I think it is pretty flexible with ping when choosing what instance you are put in..

I play in a wing quite often, and I don't have that many issues, but I can get exactly what the OP is saying.

This might seem like a very simple problem but its very complicated.
To simply things, lets say you are in the UK and your wing man is in Canada.

When you are not in a wing you see 10 players, they are mostly form Europe.

When your wingman is not in your wing he also sees 10 players, they are mostly from America.

When you join a wing together you see no-one. This is because the matchmaking has decided that one of the players from Europe has too poor a connection to the Canadian wingman, and one of the players from America has too poor a connection to yourself.

Or to put it another way, lets say there are 3 "instances" (ED uses a different concept they call an island) in a system you are jumping to. An instance with all European players, and instance with all American players, and an Instance with all Asian players. Which instance should a wing of players from both America and Europe join? None seems to be the answer here.

This is a very simplified version of what can happen, and also a worst case scenario. The number of players at a CG means you should always see some.

Basically if you jump in to a system by yourself there is a chance that there is an "instance" of players already there that matchmaking is happy connecting you to. Add a person to your wing and the chance of finding a compatible instance for both of you is much worse, have 4 players in your wing and its more difficult again

The instancing is terrible. Period. Flying in a wing, sometimes when interdicting someone(in our case, we go after player pirates) you might have one wingmate that sees him, an others that can't, and can't enter the instance if we interdict. It's frustrating beyond belief. I honestly, after being in from beta 2, cannot wrap my head around some of the core design decisions FD made. The peer-to-peer decision was pants on the head stupid to begin with..and everything else flowed from that.

I hope powerplay does something to address this. They're losing me..and I really LIKE this game.

Its got nothign to do with peer to peer, everything to do with everyone in the world being in the same game.

You name another shooter that allows players from Europe, America, Asia and Australia to play together.
