Is the point defence utility mount supposed to look so strange?

The firing effect is awesome, but the mount itself looks like some sort of strange probe-like thing.

Is it just a placeholder? I doesn't look like something that would fire anything, much less shoot the cool rapid fire green laser effect.

Anyone know?

Looks ok to me, seen similar design used in a number of SF films.
Chaff on the other hand looks like two loudspeakers for an Ipod.

It would probably look cooler as a small minigun/CWIS mount, but I'm not sure that they could do something like that and make it look good on those utility mounts.

That chaff launcher... yeah. Looks like I backed over the florist's cart when I was leaving the station and got someone's flower arrangement stuck to my hull.

I'm glad you like it, but can you or anyone else explain to me where the projectiles come out of? I'm sorry, whether anyone likes it or not, that does not look like anything that would shoot something down. At best it looks like some sort of weird radar.

Every art designer and space game in history has done point defence mounts in millions of different ways, many quite brilliantly. I don't understand why here we have to settle for some sort of strange weather antenna looking thing. And yeah I don't know what's going on with the chaff launcher either...looks really weird as well

Also it is not designed to kill anything big. Just small fast moving missiles so it doesn't need to be big.

Funny how everyone is different - for me, the point defence turret is the best looking utility model of the lot!

To answer your question, it's a mini turret that fires from the black nozzle at any incoming missiles, the nozzle part of the turret actually tracks and moves which is a lot better than the chaff launcher for example, which does indeed look like IPod speakers!
