Is the radar scope really just poor or am i missing a setting?

Is there a way to make the radar range static? It is sooooooo annoying to visually pick out a target on your scope then try to cycle to it with the blips all bunching up and spreading out as i cycle through the blips. Maybe i just missed the setting, but it is annoying me to the point that along a couple other peeves i have i am only logging on every few days now. I really hope i am just overlooking some settings somewhere.

The radar screen is horrible. Too cluttered, ranges are not static. You cant filter data. The only thing I do hate in the game.

Have you looked at the right UI panel in your cockpit? The right-most sub-tab lets you set the radar scale between "Linear" and "Logarithmic". You might prefer the linear mode?

This is what I use.. linear mode. I don't really have a problem with it.

Radar range is manually changed in normal space, there is a button for it. Increase/decrease sensor range or something. In default(minimum range) its terribly short, max range seems to be a little over 5km radius.

In supercruise its a little more complex and it changes range on its own based on your distance from the reference point and possibly your speed. And you can alter the range yourself. Honestly I do not see how you could have a radar in SC that did not have dynamic range considering the variance in velocities in SC.

I feel the radar is quite useful myself but until I started using the increase/decrease range keys it was quite jumbled.

Page up and Page down are default keys for radar range for those that were wondering or simply didn't want to wander through the key bindings list.

And there are ways to bind the zoom in/out to various continuous controllers on a HOTAS. For example, on my X52 Pro I can squeeze the clutch button (aka the pinky trigger) and roll a little wheel on the front of my throttle right under my index finger to zoom in and out very fast. I find it very useful for making sure no ships are near me in SC.

I switched to Linear back in Gamma. Made a world of difference to me. I also keep my zoom the middle mark.

In general though, and especially in Combat zones, the radar get's way too crowded and usability takes a dive.

Definitely your speed. The range of the scanner is related to how far you can travel in a given time, so as you speed up the range increases.

I did try the linear setting, but it is still not static and as i cycle through blips the range changes all by itself making it very difficult to cycle to a particular blips since they keep bunching up and spreading out as they are cycled through. I'll have to try to the sensor range buttons, but do not have my hopes up. That is the next time i actually feel like playing. Between the let down of the Python nerf and the crappy radar i have found myslef playing Titanfall instead lately for the first time in months.

The contacts page on the left is generally quicker. At least that way you can quickly lock on to the ships you know you have to look out for.

Yep, definitely use Linear mode. It is very annoying it keeps resetting to medium range, so similar to Yokai I use the index finger throttle wheel on the X52 or one of the rocker switches on the stick.

The "linear mode" doesn't work at all. It is just as annoying and logarithmic as the other setting.
