Is the repution system bugged ?

hello every1 and i apologise upfront if this thread already been created but i didnt managed to find a new thread that isent beta related.

few days ago i found myself hostile with the federation and even though i find it odd that after few times i was caught smuggeling stolen goods and shooting down a federal security service or two and maybe

even doing a couple of missions for parties which against the federation i get a hostile status. what bothers me is that i spent alot of hours doing the opposite - fed missions, shooting pirates and wanted folk i am still hostile for fed

without any near end to it.

so....what gives?

I've also found it seems very easy to become hostile to the feds, and very hard to do otherwise.

I don't think it's a bug though, just a harsh rating system. maybe it's designed that way to reflect the intolerance of the feds...

So you killed some cops and now you want to get chummy? I'd argue that killing cops should make it impossible for you to ever achieve friendly status with that faction.

It's currently much easier to lose reputation than to gain it.

Nooo. Is that so? :D

I'm trying hard to get at least neutral with the feds since day one release. In Gamma I used to get fired upon at sight. At some point I suspect devs have tweaked the heat level a bit because I had access to fed stations again, but that "unfriendly" mark seems to be written in stone.

It is by design - it's always easier to upset someone than to make them happy - these forums are proof of that! :) As with all the balancing in game we'll tweak as needed.

I've definitely been more negative on the forums than positive for sure, so I'm very much proof of that design being true.

But given that factions can loose influence easier than gaining, would it be a better idea to make one faction get a majority support by bringing down all the other factions in a system?

Is it possible to make a post explaining a bit what things affect reputation and how? I don't mean a complete detailed explanation because I am sure you also want people to figure it by themselves but the thing is that just a couple days ago I was friendly with the Empire, then I started doing bounty hunting and in a couple of hours I had gone to neutral with the system faction and also with the Empire by only doing bounty hunting (just wanted NPCs and I don't think I even killed one that his faction was the Empire, even though I would assume if they are wanted, it wouldn't lose reputation). I seriously have no idea what I've done to lose my reputation so fast and now I am a bit worried about keep doing bounty hunting because I don't want to lose more reputation.

I still think there are some issues with it.

I was sadly Unfriendly with the Empire due to a mis-understanding about some Slaves - but during my travels I was offered a permit to Summerland (Summerlamd in the permit text).

When I got there, they kept offering me the permit but telling me my reputation was not good enough to get it:

I've since managed to get myself back to Neutral but now I'm not being offered any specific missions (although I no longer get this coming up)

It's not what Sandro said.

Reputation loss from fines should no longer be the staggering blow it was (we capped it a few days back).

I will look into what options may be available for Commanders battered before this fix went in. When I find anything out, I'll post it up.

The problem that a lot of players are experiencing is that the rep hit from illegal cargo scan is huge, and it sets them back to stone ages. You should check the maximum penalty for scans.

I've finally gotten friendly with the Federation. Took a long time, and had a few setbacks due to getting caught red-handed with illicit goods. But now all is good. So many green stations, outposts and ships. If I keep on the straight and narrow - in fed space at least - I might just get allied with them some day. And if I must break the law, I might as well go pir... uhm, privateering in Evil Empire space :)

In your case, if all you truly did was shoot wanted ships, then one or more of those ships had to have been in an Empire-aligned faction. I have performed quite a bit of bounty hunting, and while on a couple occasions I noticed a rep down arrow, for the most part, I have gained reputation during bounty hunting. It is important to make sure that you focus on hunting just pirates. Verify the ship's faction in the Contacts tab of the Targets screen and/or that the ship has a cargo scanner installed.

I've been having the same issue - I'm Unfriendly with the feds (due to running out of time on a mission when real life intervened... but that's a different grumble!), so they keep offering me a permit to Sol but then not allowing me to take it.

Incidentally, it struck me as odd that they did this (I think it was a Federal Navy progression mission?) when I already *have* a permit to Sol... ;-)
