Is the resistance calculator from EDSY wonky?

UPDATE:

No issue here.
Both the values from EDSY and Coriolis are good, pretty close to what the in-game Outfitting screen displays.
All good!

Hi Commanders,

I have been scratching my head to no avail, but still not sure whether the resistance calculator from EDSY is wonky or if I am missing something.

See these two builds:

- Mirrored/Thermal/Reflective bulkhead + all Thermal/Deep plating HRP's
gives 66.1% resistance to thermal attacks, for an effective integrity of 11065.3 against thermal (and of course, sucks against kinetic and explosion):

- Now, I change the class 4 HPR's from Thermal to Kinetic
unexpectedly increases to 72% resistance to thermal attacks, or an effective integrity of 13395.0 against thermal (and faring much better against kinetic):

Why would a change in HRP's from Thermal to Kinetic increase the resistance to thermal attacks?

Can you even check the total resistance values in game (I am not at my computer now, but did not recall seeing that on any of the outfitting screens)?
They are visible in outfitting where your shield and armor hitpoints are shown (not sure if you need to select something to swap out to see that part of the interface) and the equivalent section of the right-hand ship panel.

You are right, I can press a key to switch between the ships specs, including the resistance values! I never noticed that...
This ship is parked away from my current location. I will have to check and confirm whether EDSY is right or wrong later.

OK, I will have to check and compare with EDSY.
Coriolis gives the same resistance values (except that it displays the damage taken):

As a remark, I could not find the "Thermal Vent" effect for my beam, and the Sirius pre-engineered heat sinks are not on the list.
I will keep using EDSY. ;)

And here is what the in-game Outfitting screen displays:

That is pretty close to what EDSY and Coriolis say.
All good here, commanders, case closed.

And, thanks a ton cmdr Kira Goto!!!

I suspect this has to do with the diminishing returns formula but I'm too tired to work out the math now.

You made some confusing statements in your first post, so at first I didn't see the problem.
But there definitely seems to be something off with the HRPs I don't understand.
With three kinetic HRPs the thermal goes indeed up, as well as the kinetic, it has more thermal resistance than the build with 3 thermal HRPs.
Baffling 🤯

I would have thought it's a Coriolis error, but if you could reproduce in game...I hope someone can explain this. 🤷‍♂️

Reminds me of the Elder Scrolls Arena overflow bug, where you could create a spell so expensive it went into negative and you
could unleash everything on your enemies for zero mana :ROFLMAO:

It's a consequence of how frontier designed the calculation for diminishing returns and has been this way forever. There have been several writeups on the subject over the years if you search on the subject of calculating armour or shield resistances. tl;dr: There's a point where the curve bends the wrong way.

I personally don't really wish to see this fixed.
As they are, things are not broken, and it is not like one can build an invincible ship, or regenerate hull from negative damage.

There are currently more pressing issues with the game, things that could be improved on both the gameplay and cosmetic side, QoL improvments, contents to be added, work on the bridge between space and on-foot activities, etc...

I would also hate to see the resistance values changed after a future update...I would then have to change the configuration of all my ships, collect materials, fly them to the engineers, etc... I and other players spent hours doing that already, don't want to do it again.

As long as we are a way to see accurate numbers so that we can plan our builds, I believe this is good enough (and infinitely better than how things were about 8-10 years ago!).

Uh, personally I don't care, it's not fundamentally broken so I can't be arxed to raise an issue, and well, about that anyways... 🤷‍♂️

It's just very strange and non-intuitive. Maybe someone will explain.

You should really be discussing this on the edcd discord. There you can talk to the developers. See our link below
There's a massive downside to taking a chat like this to Discord: search engines can't ever find the discussion, so nobody in the future will ever learn from it.
In my experience, even Discord's internal search system sucks so badly that the discussion may as well have been a verbal one-to-one chat, i.e. totally ephemeral.

By having a discussion like this here on the forum, on the other hand, you've got the forum search engine to help you find it (not to mention many third-party search engines which are probably even better). Knowledgeable people can also directly link to it from other conversations wherever (even Discord! :ROFLMAO:), and it can thus provide value years into the future...
