Is the whole "Open is taken over by griefers" thing a meme or a lie?

Common misinformation. Avoid 5-6 systems and it's fine.

Areas where large bunches of players gather brings the people that want to give players and leads to stories about it being a deathtrap when really it's just the few popular systems.

Shinrarta Dezhara, Engineer systems, Community goals and powerplay capitals. Avoid those and you are highly unlikely to meet a player let alone be killed by one :)

Try to participate in a community goal, where you are likely to see several players on radar at once.

... see if your time gets wasted and your mood ruined, as some players simply lack understanding of the word "community".

I believe that is what They are referring to.

It is just propaganda put about by those calling for a PvE open play mode. Yes it happen, not a lot and normally where the Zebras gather, such as CGs and new player systems.

It's CG's and such. Any area that's heavily publicised and therefore has a lot of non PvP fit ships flying about. Starter systems, CG's, discoveries. Avoid those areas and you'll likely never be ganked.

Open isn't as dangerous as people make out.

What few altercations I've had with other CMDRs I've escaped, bar 1.

So many things play a part in your experience in Open, instancing being the main one, time of day, day of the week, system traffic, block list, etc.

Out of the countless CMDRs I've seen in Open, and the 100s I've spoke too, I've been attacked by less than 10.
And only 1 managed to kill me. (Mainly because I messed up big time!)

Still, I generally avoid CGs in Open, unless I fancy a challenge.
There's no point earning 5-6mil from the CG if you spend 12mil on a rebuy. Lol

So you are saying avoid other players and there are no "griefers". I agree ;)

The question is then, why play in Open at all? [hehe]

I play on Xbox but what's starting to happen is the emergence of enforcement player groups. I'm a member of one myself, although I've been bad with participation lately. While there are griefers there is also a lot of PvP players policing CG's and other popular systems. I've done it myself and it's fun. You fly around in SC, looking for wanted CMDRs and pull them over and give them a taste of their own medicine. It seems like the community is slowly starting to sort itself out.

This. I used to think otherwise, but... Open is just fine.

I look forward to the Thargoids killing countless Mobius-ites, and harvesting the salt it generates on the forum.

I just read your signature... I'll have to keep an eye out.

Suppose it depends on how bad the butt kicking was in open.
Over a year ago when I bought my first Python I was interdicted, blown up and I was very slightly short of rebuy (I was en route to sell another ship) I was raging until I accepted the no rebuy booboo was my own stupid fault and I was more angry with myself than the other player.
I probably lost 10 Mil to the rebuy screen the other day trying to fight with fixed on.my Courier.
I've plenty CR so the rebuy won't an issue.
Long story short people really only get angry imo when they're very close to achieving an objective and are thwarted.

As stated, there are folks out there just looking to frustrate you, but they are far between and you can usually gauge where they would be (CG's, PP capitals, starter systems, Founders, places that are frequented so they can get easy targets)

I fly open and have made more friends than enemies. Lats night I saw probably 5-6 CMDR's (when I was in a popular system I always assume there will be others) and no conflict. I sent out "o7"s and got probably 50% return. Not fired on once.

Just pay attention to your surroundings and all is typically fine.

Total hyperbole and propaganda.

Play in Open mostly, I've not seen anyone for weeks. Thought doing some passenger missions would bring more contact but no, not seen anyone for a while. I'm one jump from a PP capital where I call home too... You have to go to the usual hotspots to find people as a rule, turn the awareness dial up to eleven, it's fun. Shinrarta and CG's are the only dangerous places in the entire galaxy.

Open is not overtaken by griefers.

You do find a lot of player killers around CG's, certain systems like Shinrarta Dezhra and other points of interest within the game, because they know there are targets to shoot at in those places. However, you very rarely encounter them if you're just flying around minding your own business. I move about between Federation and Alliance space a lot and I don't see that many.

Open is not near as dangerous and the very vocal hardcore PvE crowd makes it out to be. Chances of player interaction outside of CGs is next to none. Even at a CG you will rarely face problems as 99% of the combat ships flying around are looking for other combat ships. You might be pirated (maybe even by me) but as long as you cooperate you won't be fired upon or asked for much cargo (I ask for 5 units max, even less for smaller ships). There is always the other 1%, but with a little skill you can almost always escape.
