Is there a 64 bit client?

The Mac version will be 64 bit, IIRC

Not that it matters to most, but I'm looking forward to the Mac version so I can take ED on the road with me :D

There should have been. Braben must think it's still 1985.

Well, it would be unnecessary work, though I'd be wiling to bet it is on their backlog....way at the bottom.

For the first cut though, 32 bit was the way to go to ensure as many computers could run the game as possible. 64bit really only earns you the greater address space for RAM but ED rarely goes over 1GB on machine.

Should have been 64bit only. The last 32bit cpu that was made was something like 12 years ago.

There is also no reason to still be running a 32bit OS.

Maybe 32-bit is fine because Elite doesn't need to address over 4GB of memory.

There is no performance gain in being 64-bit.

How about having a fundamental reason 'as to why' before being derisory about the age of things.

No, the reason is that some people are still running 32 bit for whatever reasons. Just like I have to smash my head against the wall every time we need to resolve a bug in our web app b/c someone is still using IE 7.

The gains from having a 64 bit client ONLY do not outweigh the losses of excluding potential customers.

SMAA also uses up RAM, the higher the sampling the more VRAM/RAM you use. If you're only using 1GB, do you have AA off?

But a 32 bit client is way more compatible. Ideally we should have both 64bit and 32bit clients, using the one that matches your system. Maybe one day.

The Cobra Engine is already 64-bit internally. For the moment being they are simply compiling 32-bit clients since there is no real gain in doing anything else yet. If they later need to go 64-bit they will pretty much just flip a switch and do so. One of the devs actually went into great detail about this a couple of months ago...bit I can't be bothered to find it right now. It's Friday evening and I'm having some wine! :D

Yeah, I have AA off so that probably keeps my numbers down. Damn aged beast of a computer

I think the ideal situation would be to have both clients, but, the gain of 64 bit is not needed just yet. I'd rather they work on more prescient issues.

> 64bit does more than just allow you to fill more ram.

Yes, native 64 bit data types and larger data structures, but it seems they're not needed here.

Since a chunk of the game processing is server side anyway, I doubt there's much noticeable performance gain on worrying about CPU here.

When a piece of software doesn't use more than 2GB of RAM, there is absolutely no point or need to have a 64bit client.

It would be a waste of time and resources.

If they released a 64bit client tomorrow, there would be absolutely no difference between the two. As the game only uses around 1GB of RAM anyway.

For software that is more RAM intensive (video/ image editing software) then 64bit is a necessity.
